Oliver's POV
Kara's been silent. She's struggling, I know. There's a constant pained look on her face she thinks she's hiding, but the odd hiss of pain that comes from her mouth every so often gives her discomfort away.
She's barely spoken since her near panic attack in the jeep.
"There," she suddenly whispers.
I follow her gaze to a building shrouded in vines and overgrown bushes.
"We're in the old park," she whispers.
It's a weird feeling being here, knowing everything that happened when this park fell. We're stepping over history.
I pull the crowbar I took from my Jeep out of my rucksack and use it to force the door open. Raising my gun, I lead the way in, doing one quick sweep of the room.
"Clear," I say. Turning to Kara, I lower my gun. "How are you holding up?"
She forces a smile. "I'll be fine. Let's just find these boys and get out of here."
There's a crash of metal nearby and I exchange looks with Kara before raising my gun and leading the way once more. As we approach, faint voices can be heard. I count down from 3 with my fingers to Kara before kicking open the door to the garage. In front of us are two boys with scared looks on their faces and I immediately lower my gun.
"Claire's nephews?" I ask them.
They both nod and the younger one steps forward. "Is Aunt Claire okay?"
I nod. "Yeah kid, she's okay. We've all been looking for you." They both smile in relief. "What are your names?"
"I'm Gray, and this is my brother Zach," he answers and I nod. "Are you two going to get us out of here?" he questions.
I look at Kara, my eyes scanning her body - she hasn't let me look at any of her injuries so I don't know what shape she's in under her blood covered clothes. I turn back to the boys nodding. We'll do our best, I think.
"Let's get outta here..." Kara mutters.
"That's what we're trying to do," Zach spits, but when his eyes settle on Kara, they soften and he chokes on his own words. "But uh- we haven't gotten anywhere so far. We're trying to get one of these jeeps started. I think we're nearly there."
Kara nods, motioning for me to help them out. For a moment we work away, but the Zach steps towards Kara slightly. "Are you okay?" he asks her.
When I don't hear Kara respond, I twist my head round towards them. She's stood, but she's not moving. It's like she didn't hear him. "Kara?" I ask. Standing up, I signal for Zach to keep working on the jeep and step closer to her. "Kara?" I place my hands lightly on her cheeks and she blinks, moving her eyes to look at me. "Are you okay?"
Kara nods but I know it's a lie, and she knows I see right through it.
Neither of us have a chance to speak as the engine of the jeep starts up.
"You did it!" Gray says, looking proudly at his brother.
"Let's go!" Zach calls to us.
I go to help Kara into the jeep but she pushes my hand away. "I'm not incapable," she mutters.
Zach and Gray jump in the front while I get in the back with Kara. As we drive away from the old park, Gray speaks up.
"I thought you failed your driver's test," Gray comments, side glancing Zach.
I see Zach smile in his reflection. "No, only the driving part."
"Oh god," I mutter, holding on tighter.
