"Roni, wake up," a husky voice whispered in my ear.
I opened my eyes slowly and quickly realized that it's Daniel.
Who else did I expect?
He's laying down next to me in our king-sized bed.
"Good afternoon, baby," he grins, while he slid closer towards me.
I smile, "good afternoon."
He leans forward then kisses my lips softly. It brought back memories from last night. I pull away quickly since all I can feel now is guilt.
He noticed because he quickly gives me a look.
"Are you okay?" he asks confused.
Suddenly, my mouth goes dry. I gotta tell him. He needs to know that Diablo kissed me last night, and I corresponded. He needs to know the truth because that's what he deserves.
"Daniel, there's something I need to tell you," my voice quivered.
"What is it?"
I sit up straight. "I lied when I told you I was sick yesterday-"
He cuts me short with a giggle.
"Oh, that's what this is about," he takes my hand. "Don't worry baby, Melissa already told me."
My heart hammered against my ribcage. I am both scared and confused? Does Melissa know? But how? I haven't talked to her.
"What did she tell you?" I asked.
He bites his lower lip. "She told me that the real reason you didn't come with me to see my family was that you're still upset about the way they treated you before. I should have known baby, and I'm sorry, but you don't have to worry about that okay? I totally understand where you were coming from. I just wish I could have realized it sooner. You're my soon-to-be-wife, and I will defend you against the world even it's against my own."
My heart stopped when I heard the word wife.
"Wait, say that again?" I tell him while trying to hide a smile.
"What part?" he grinned, knowing exactly what I am talking about.
"That I'm- you want me to be..." I rambled.
He laughs then stood up from the bed. He begins to dig into his front pockets, making me hold my breath waiting anxiously for what's about to happen next.
"The plan was to ask you at the family gathering, but-"
As soon as I see him get down on one knee, I lose it.
"Daniel, don't play like this," I cried then buried my head into my pillow.
A million emotions flowing through me all at once.
"Roni, please, look at me," he says.
I lift my head from the pillow to look at him, but then I get a glimpse of the engagement ring and my head hits the pillow again.
"Okay fine," he continued, "just hear me out. I'm not really good at these kinds of things-"
Again I lift my head, "then don't say anything, Danny. I'm about to have a panic attack."
I slip off the covers to sit on the edge of the bed. He comes in between my thighs.
"Then I'll get straight to the point," he takes the ring out of the box and looks directly at me. "Veronica Mendoza, I never thought I would say this, but will you marry me? Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Will you make me the happiest man on earth and say yes?"
My heart melted at his words. The emotions were racing at a billion miles per hour speed. I couldn't figure out what to say or how to react. After last night, the timing sure isn't the best.
Just listen to your heart, Roni.
I close my eyes to take a deep long breaths.
"Daniel," I whispered.
"Yes, baby?" he sounded desperate for an answer.
I don't blame him. So am I, but I know I need time to figure things out.
"I need time to think," I tell him.
The sudden look on his face after I said that, made me want to take it back immediately.
"Think about what?" Melissa blurts out from the door.
I hadn't even noticed her.
She comes in arms crossed on her chest. "It's either you love him and you want to be with him forever or you don't."
The tone of her voice made me tense a little bit, but I know she's trying to look out for me, and for Daniel. She's right, though. The kiss with Diablo shouldn't keep me from deciding for what I truly want.
So what do I want?
"Yes," my voice squealed. "Yes, Daniel, I want to live the rest of my life with you."
Daniel brings me into a kiss before putting my engagement ring in my finger.
"I love you," he says.
"I love you, Daniel. I love you, and I really mean that."
The smile of Daniel's face was priceless. I wish Melissa would be capturing this moment on video, but she's not. Instead, she just stood there watching us, emotionless. There was a weird vibe too, but I'm too happy to worry right now.
That's right.
I'm engaged.
