prompt 14: "I don't think I've ever been this... Happy. It's an odd feeling."
"Is everything ready?" Ponyboy asked as we all hid in the kitchen, waiting to hear the front door open.
Today was Johnny's birthday and we had all gone out of our way to celebrate it. Dally had gone to find him and walk him over. They would be here any second now.
Steve knocked something over and a chorus of shushes arose from the rest of us.
"Shut up, Steve!" Two-bit laughed.
"Both of you shut up, you'll ruin it!" I snapped despite the huge smile on my face.
Everyone was murmuring quietly among themselves and we heard the doorknob turn. Ponyboy shushed all of us and we immediately shut up, waiting for the two boys to come in.
Darry quickly lit the candles on the cake and made sure he had it ready for when we'd walk out.
"Is nobody here, Dal-"
Sodapop flipped the switch and we emerged from the kitchen, all of us singing Happy Birthday.
"Happy Birthday to you! Happy birthday to you," Darry carried the cake out as the rest of us smiled at Johnny. Johnny's eyes widened and a huge surprised grin broke out onto his face.
We finished singing and we all clapped, laughing at how shocked Johnny was. Dally had grabbed the birthday hat we got for Johnny and shoved it onto his head, so now everyone was wearing them besides Dally since he'd refused to put one on.
"Blow out your candles, Johnnycakes! Make a wish!" I encouraged him. Johnny snapped out of his daze and blew out the candles with one harsh breath.
"Happy birthday, man." Dally put a hand on Johnny's shoulder and smiled at the boy. Johnny seemed speechless. I couldn't blame him though. No one ever celebrated his birthday.
"W-why'd you guys do this for me?" He finally spoke and his voice wavered slightly as he smiled at all of us. I laughed softly.
"You deserve to have a birthday celebration, even if it's small."
Johnny was silently in awe again before he asked another question.
"Whose idea was this?"
"Y/n and Ponyboy thought of it originally." Steve answered. I shoved my hands in the back pockets of my jeans, nervously rocking on my heels. Ponyboy and I shared a glance.
"You guys thought of this for me?" Johnny's gaze flickered between the two of us. We nodded.
"T-thank you guys. Really, I mean that."
Ponyboy and I smiled.

We had all been talking and laughing in the living room for an hour or two. I was laughing at an odd story Two-bit was telling all of us when there was a tap on my shoulder. I looked up to see Johnny.
"Yeah?" I asked. His eyes looked away from mine for a moment in a shy manner.
"Could I talk to you for a second outside?"
"Sure!" I stood up and we made our way outside. I walked ahead of Johnny since he seemed to hesitate.
Once we made it outside I sat down on the steps and he joined me. I looked over at him.
"What did you want to talk about?" I rested my chin on my hand. Johnny tugged at his sleeve and finally met my eyes with his.
"I wanted to thank you for doing all that."
"Why didn't you bring Ponyboy out here too?"
"Well, there was one other thing I wanted to talk to you about." His voice got quieter. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.
"What's up?"
"I..." He trailed off and stood up, "Nevermind, forget it. It's silly."
"Why, what is it? I promise I won't judge you, have I ever?" I shot up and grabbed his hand so he wouldn't leave. He looked down at our hands.
"I like you and I know you don't feel the same but I had to get it off my chest-"
"Woah, slow down! It's okay, I like you too!" I cut off his rambling and grabbed his shoulders. His face was flushed and he shook his head.
"No, you don't get it. I like you. Like really like you. M-more than a friend would like you."
"Well I like you too. Like really like you as well."
"Really?" A look of hope was in his eyes and I couldn't help but grin.
"Of course I do! How could I not?" Both of our faces were burning by now.
He leaned in quickly and pressed his lips to mine. Before I could react he pulled away and backed up.
"I-I'm sorry, that was rude I should've asked-" He began to ramble again but I held both of his hands in mine, smiling reassuringly.
"It's okay, I liked it."
"You did?"
"Yeah." I swung our hands back and forth and looked down suddenly feeling flustered.
"Would you maybe want to be my girl?"
My eyes shot up to his once he said that and a huge smile crossed my face.
"Yes!" I answered excitedly. He jumped from my loud answer.
I cleared my throat, embarrassed by how eager I sounded.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. But yes, I'd love to be your girl."
We stood in silence for a moment, both of us in a happy daze. Neither of us knew what to say, and honestly I don't think we had to say anything.
"I don't think I've ever been this... Happy. It's an odd feeling." Johnny's voice came out in a hushed tone.
He smiled softly to himself, not looking at me.
"It sounds ridiculous, I know." He played with our fingers as he spoke. I giggled.
"That's not ridiculous at all. I'm happy too."
We smiled at each other and he hugged me. I was surprised by the sudden move but I immediately embraced him back.
