"Hey Alex! Come on! Wait up!" I call out to my older sister as she outruns me without breaking a sweat. The FBI Academy really does a number on somebody, when we were kids I was known for outrunning my sister. They really do grow up.
"What's the matter Kara? Can't keep up?" Alex teases as she slows herself down to match my speed.
"What'd they do to you in that academy, you're a beast." I tease her although deeply appreciating her matching my speed so that I could finally keep up with the voice inside my head reminding me to breath throughout the workout.
"Well the first half was all physical fitness and defensive tactics which started me off, but if it wasn't for Maggie I probably wouldn't have kept pushing myself until I was able to increase my distance and endurance." Alex admits and I could hear the uplift in her words as she talks about her girlfriend, a warm, familiar feeling settles in me as I can't keep my thoughts from drifting to Lena. "She's really just amazing Kara." Alex adds on with the same implications.
"She sounds it Alex, I'm really happy for you." I full heartedly confess to my older sister, truly glad to know that she finally found someone she could be truly happy with, and just be herself. Kinda like how Lena makes me feel. I know that she comes with a powerful last name, with a wealthy business named in its honor of course, but when it's just me and Lena I don't see a greedy, selfish, spoiled brat, but a beautiful, funny, creative woman who has completely taken control of my heart, and apparently my thoughts as well.
"Hey Kara?" Alex breaks through my thoughts with concerned tone. "You okay? You seem distracted? Are you gonna pass out?" Alex's tone shifts to panicky mode, as any person would under the influence someone is about to faint.
I discard her concern on the matter with a smugly amused smile. "I'm fine Alex, but I gotta say it's glad to know that there's still a heart underneath all that stone." I joke in hopes to keep her off my tracks given that I actually found someone who makes me genuinely happy again, and not for Alex to screw it up with her "sisterly words of wisdom." Yes, she actually calls it that. I know she doesn't mean it but she just can't hold her thoughts back for a single moment. Believe me when I say it can really be infuriating sometimes.
"Oh ha-ha Kara, you're hilarious." Alex renders back in an overly sarcastic tone, making me laugh which was kinda hard while running. "But seriously you'd tell me if something was up right?" Alex then follows back with her genuine concern for me, and I can't blame her, we've been inseparable for years, lately it's been a bit different but for all the years we did spend together, there's still nobody that I would confide to more than Alex. Just not about Lena. Not yet.
"Of course, Alex. You know that." I say as if it's something Alex should already know, which it should be. "Now are we gonna push it back to the camp before they all start waking up over there?" I say abruptly changing the topic, really hoping that Alex would leave things at that so I could get back to the camp and see Lena. Alex woke me up super early on our first night back from the counselors away trip, and took me on a run, we've been out here ever since.
"Try to keep up!" Alex yells although shes already far ahead of me but as I reach my maximum speed I'm just barely flanking her, awarding me with my own sense of personal achievement.
We make it back to the camp just as they began to rise the flag that signified the wholesomeness of the camp with our very own Camp Maverick flag. The only thing on my mind was to check on Lena, knowing that she probably took the advantage of sleeping in. I had wanted to wake her up myself but I moving figure caught the corner of my eye. My first assumption was an early deer picking up left over Graham's from the bonfire, but as I turned my head for a better view I instantly noticed it was Lena coming down from the cabins.
