The day started out like any other, with me strolling around the city listening to music. One would think I was on patrol following my hero duties, but in reality, I was grabbing some things for my father.
It had been over seven years since mom died, but the poor man was still helpless. I was only fifteen when I watched my mother disappear before my eyes. That's a tough age in general and losing her only made it worse. After her death it was just Dad, my younger sister and I. Kat was only 5 when mom died so her memories became non-existent with time. That was the most painful thing to see.
I also watched as my father lose his spark. He became quiet and frail with every passing day. The one thing about my father people should know is that he loves my sister and I. He's tried his hardest to make us happy and be there as much as he could in the wake of moms absence. A new single dad with two daughters doesn't sound like the ideal situation, but that's the thing, my father always tried.
With any grand gesture or remark, Kat and I treated it like it was solid gold. It was an unspoken rule between us to always protect dad. Make sure dad is happy.
As I stroll through the bleak city my mind drifts to my 16-year-old self tasting dads sad attempt at moms famous cheesecake. It was a favorite of mine. He tried his best to make it for me but due to inexperience added way too much cream cheese. Bringing the forkful to my mouth I remember his eyes widened waiting for my reaction as I tried my best to chew every bite and swallow.
"Delicious dad!" I would say with a smile "exactly how mom made it!" And he would beam at me and clap his hands together.
I would do anything for my father. He's all I have and I'd be a real ass to ever take that for granted as I did with mom.
Checking off the last few things on his list I quickly make my way to dads. I moved him out of the old house once I came into some money and found him an apartment closer to me. That way he was an easy couple blocks away so I could check in without worrying.
I was very fortunate to be in the position that I am. At only 22 years old I had reached pro hero status, something people twice my age cannot even reach. With this came a lot of perks, mainly helping out my dad.
I had never had any strong plans to become a hero though, it all happened so fast that before I could catch my breath I was here. I couldn't walk by a store or tv without seeing my face all over it. Children would stop me for pictures or autographs while I dashed around saving lives.
My life hadn't always been this easy so to put it simply, the notoriety went right to my head and I didn't really give a fuck. It's always been me against the world so it felt nice to be the name on everyone's lips.
I think back to all the people who would look at me with disgust and fear as a kid due to my quirk. I bet they see me everywhere and it pisses them off.
I chuckle to myself as I turn the key to unlock the door of my dad's apartment."Hun is that you??"
My dad's meek voice an almost whisper that trailed through the empty house as I set down the bags of groceries.
"Yeah dad it's just me, I'm putting your groceries away quick then I'll be right there"
I quickly organize his fridge and cabinets with new snacks before making my way into the living room. Dad sat propped in his nice leather chair watching the day time news. It was as if he never left since the last time I saw him.
"Hey dad" I say leaning over to hug him. He remains seated as his hands wrap around me patting my back in a loving way.
"Long time no see Misaki!"
