“Éstas son las mañanitas que cantaba el Rey David. Hoy por ser día de tu santo, te las cantamos a ti. Despierta, mi bien, despierta, mira que ya amaneció. Ya los pajarillos cantan, la luna ya se metió.” I listened attentively to Anna as she sang her version of ‘Happy Birthday’ in Spanish. Karen and Melissa were standing without much to say beside me while they tried singing along the foreign language. Anna was half Hispanic and sometimes, when she grew irritated at me, she’d begin to prattle in her native tongue nonstop. Although this time she was singing in her marvelous voice the 'Happy Birthday' song she'd promise to embarrass herself with.
They all clapped loudly and howled their excitement in my ear while laughing once the song was over. I stared at the chocolate cake with white frosting resting on the table that baffled me. Strawberries were surrounding the edges, sprinkles of different colors on the sides, and 10 candles of multi-color were lit. Anna must've worked so hard on it...
"Now blow out the candles, A!" Melissa squealed in exhilaration. Her and Karen were the two girls in the entire state of Oklahoma I'd consider my friends and have know since being toddlers. They've never missed one of my birthday's so I expected them at Anna's place, where we usually celebrated our events, on November the 3rd for my 10th birthday.
I laughed a real laugh with actual elation while shutting my eyes tightly. My mind started to saunter around what I could wish for.
I could always ask for The Great Gatsby which I've been wanting to read for some time now. Maybe a phone at the age of 10 won't spoil me too much? New parents don't sound so bad...
So with my eyes firmly clenched, I blew the ten colorful candles and wished for the solemnest thought in my head: happiness. Whether it came today or tomorrow or in seven years, I was willing to take happiness in any form it came at me.
They never ceased their ear-piercing clapping and whistling even after all the smoke had cleared from the blown out candles.
"So, what did you wish for, Blaire?" Karen asks in her curios mien.
"Hey! If I tell you it won't come true!" I said laughing, but meaning my words. And I really want this to come true.
Before anyone could speak another word, the banging on the front door became uncomfortably audible. The person was obviously angry and I could tell from the solid knocking that would throw down the door if not answered soon.
Anna's concerned expression looked at me with empathy and told us to stay put while she went to answer the door.
I could immediately hear Shelby's roaring cursing and the wrath in her voice as she stormed into the kitchen where we were.
