The Trial

“How do you plead, madam, guilty or not guilty?” the judge asked.

“Guilty” Cecelia said with a tear-stained face. She looked so weak sitting in the plaintiff’s seating area. I shook my head, trying to clear her image from my head, I still had more work to do.

“Have the jury come to a verdict?” The judge asked after what seemed like hours. The one jury that wasn’t sitting nodded. He stood up and handed an envelope to the officer standing there. The officer took the envelope and handed it to the judge.

“Cecelia West, you are hereby sentenced to life without parole.” The judge announced with a tap of the gavel.

Everyone got up, the trial was over. As everyone was filing out of the courtroom, Janine walked up to Cecelia.

“Cecelia, why?”

Cecelia turned to face us. Her eyes were cold.

“My fiancé cheated on me. My brother mistreated me the day my parents stepped out of my life. I grow up to find that he is an evil mastermind who killed my parents. How do you think I feel about life in general? If my brother wants me to kill my fiancé then fine I’ll do it. I couldn’t care less about anyone.”

Janine took a step back, shocked. I shook my head and watched her leave.  No matter how messed up she was, there will always be another messed up criminal somewhere out there. And with that, I checked my messages to see that I had another case to get started on. I turned to give Janine a nod. She gave me a pout before we walked out of court together, to the next case.
