yoongi went to his seat at the bus with hyejin following behind.

he frowned when hyejin chose to sit at the far back instead of sitting next to him.

does she not want to talk to me? he thought but despite that he still made his way and sat beside her.

"i haven't been receiving any pickup lines from you for some time now. don't you think it's time to start sending them again?" he started the conversation.

"actually i wrote one for you earlier. but not a pickup line this time."

she handed him a small paper and he unfolded it only to reveal a quote.

'the best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.
-kjh'

yoongi sighed in relief after reading it. he was actually expecting another depressing line.

she shrugged, "i decided to give it a try."

"i'm glad you did. you can trust me, i'll try to help as much as i can." yoongi assured her.

she nodded, "so, you ready to listen to my story?"

yoongi nodded his head earnestly.

"my parents died in a car accident a year ago." she started as she took a deep breath and tried to calm herself.

"mom was an only child and dad had an older sister. my grandparents from both side thought it was better for my aunt to take me in as they were too old to take care of me. it was stupid, really. i know they only thought of me as a burden." hyejin sighed.

"i moved in to my aunt's house not long after. she lived alone, never got married. i eventually found out all those guys she dated before left her because they couldn't stand her. i wondered why for a while but the longer i lived with her, the more i understood why. she abused me whenever she got drunk."

hyejin then pulled her skirt up a bit which flustered yoongi.

"h-hey, what are you doi—"

"you see this?" she gently caressed the evident scar at her thigh with her thumb.

"your aunt did that?" yoongi asked reluctantly. he couldn't believe his eyes.

he always noticed that her skirt was visibly longer than the other girls but he never knew the reason behind it until he saw the scar.

she laughed bitterly, "yeah. i have another one caused by her, but luckily it's covered at my back where no one can see it."

"but, how? what did she do to leave that of a big scar?"

"i remember returning home after midnight and she was having her glass of wine at the kitchen island. apparently i forgot to clean the house and cook her breakfast before leaving for school that day. i wasn't on my right mind then. so she got furious and threw the wine glass onto the floor. it shattered, she threw a shard of glass at me and it got my thigh. it was sorta tragic, really."

"why didn't you move out even after you knew she was treating you like that?"

she sighed, "i'm trying to. i've been saving up this past year but it's still not enough to rent a studio apartment. i'm currently taking three part time jobs after school and after doing some calculations, i think it's possible to move out in another four months."

yoongi scoffed, "are you joking? four months is longer than you think. you sure you're gonna be fine? you can just move into my place at the mo—"

"that's the last thing i'd do." she cut him off and chuckled.

"look, yoongi. i'm gonna be just fine. i just have to hold out for another four months and i'll be free. you don't have to worry, really." she assured him.

yoongi looked at her in worry, clearly still unconvinced, "i really think you should stay at my place instead. i'm really okay with it. there's a guest room but we rarely get any so you can sleep there. it'll take a while to convince my parents but trust me, it'll work."

hyejin gave him a brittle smile, "it's okay, yoongi. i don't want to be a hassle. i can handle this by myself."

yoongi was about to object but they had almost reached hyejin's stop.

hyejin turned to him and smiled broadly which puzzled yoongi, "we've arrived at my stop. i guess i'll have to get off. sorry i  can't talk to you longer. we'll just continue what we left on tomorrow at school, i guess— oh, do you want me to send another pickup line— nah i think it's about time i stopped sending them, don't you think?"

yoongi merely started at her.

she pursed her lips, "i talked a little bit too much, didn't i? i'm so sorry, i didn't mean to be so annoying. well then, i'll get off now. see you tomorrow, yoongi!"

she then stood up and headed towards the rear door that had just swung open.

yoongi snapped back into reality, "wait— hyejin!"

hyejin turned around, "yeah?"

yoongi hesitates for a while before asking, "are you sure you're gonna be okay?"

hyejin gave him an unusual smile he couldn't figure out, "don't worry, yoongi. i'll be fine."
