Restless war

Do you ever wonder why some people can sleep
At the drop of a hat, head hit the pillow
They can let go of consciousness and leap
Into their dreams and simply let go

But the rest of us
The universe is at our fingertips
When dreams escape our grasp
Sleep is best for us
But first we must come to grips
With reality before our minds slip
Into the war our minds have amassed

We face the battles of tomorrow before repose
Our minds race ahead of us before eyes close
And with constant worry and fear in our minds
We leave all thought of peaceful rest behind

What is this curse
That though we try to shut off our thoughts
Our minds still sweetly they sing
Verse after verse
Their warsong chants of the ruin we've wrought
How can we rest when plans have come naught
And when we know not what the morn brings?

Perhaps the reason
For those who find sleep
Are not simply experts
At numbering sheep
But have long ago agreed
On a treaty with mind
To deal with tonight
And tomorrow in kind
So that when they seek the peaceful embrace
Of heavy eyelids quickly falling in place
Their minds don't resist, but also rest assured
That tonight's plan is to rest, and once secured
Minds can tackle tomorrow
Once tomorrow is here
