As the River Flows

Down the river we go

The canoe glides without sound

As the river flows

And water splashes 'gainst the ground

For the river picks up pace

And draws your boat in the rapids

So with the water you race

And the smaller things become vapid

So loses all meaning

Spring morning and summer nights

And you stop all gleaning

Of joy from those at your side

Your friends, family and those

To whom you clung with death's grip

The water rewrites your prose

Through your fingers they slip

Because you hate to fight

The current which pulls you in

How much easier to ride

Then paddle back to shore again

And by the time the white water ends

And you near river's edge

Those whom you once called friends

Between you lies an ugly wedge

And so you drift to dock alone

On a solitary shore

And your heart sinks like a stone

As this is what you asked for
