A man walked to the city
On a brisk autumn day
Pulling cart behind him
So he could sell his hay
But not far down the old dirt path
A rock was in the trail
That broke the wheel of his old cart
That carried all his bales
And so he spent an hour or so
To change his spare wheel
And off to the city again
So he could make a deal
But a wolf happened on his path
And tried to eat him whole
So he killed it with his pitch fork
And even more time it stole
So he threw the carcass on his load
To sell it to a tanner
And still the rest of his long day
Continued in tedious manner
Another farmer who needed help
To take his crop to town
A young girl who needed her dad
So he had to track him down
So by the time he reached his stop
The sun was nearly gone
And he cursed and mumbled 'neath his breath
'Bout how his day had carried on
So he gave the wolf's gray pelt away
To the tanner there in town
And only made it back to home
After the sun was down
The next day went like the first
His wheel broke post haste
But the man who'd lost his daughter
Gave a wheel he could replace
And down the road another wolf
Attacked the man again
But the farmer who needed help
Helped defend his friend
And in the city the tanner shook
On a deal the man had to shake
Throw in this new gray wolf pelt
And all his hay he'd take
So pretty penny in pocket
The man pulled his cart home
And pondered how his day had gone
And how if he'd been alone
He'd arrive at town at the start of dusk
Just as the day before
But since he'd given his time away
He came back home with more
