Mermaids

I once heard of mermaids and how great they can swim.

With their long flowy hair and their majestical fin.

But I have met mermaids that have none of those things.

They brighten up other people's lives no matter the hurt it brings.

They swim in sorrow at depths only some can wonder.

Their hearts are like villages people have pilfered and plundered.

I know the secrets that these beautiful creatures can keep.

What dark things they hide in this humanless deep.

People call us sirens because we draw people in and spit them back out.

What they don't see is the pain people cause without second-guessing or doubt.

We don't hurt people because we want to, we do it to protect.

Why can't you see we already have hearts full of neglect.

I'm not saying some mermaids haven't become the monsters you see.

But but some of us are not like that we just want to be free.

So don't hold us accountable the pain you humans bring.

Because you willingly fall into a trap that we Sirens sing.
