Keith had to actually wake up early to get in line for meds. He waited behind Lance and Marcus, Spencer behind him. When it was his turn, he walked up to the med window and they handed him two cups, one with two orange pills and a cup of water. He threw them back like a shot and swallowed them.

"Lift your tongue." The nurse said.

"What?"

"We need to know that you actually took them."

Keith complied and then went to get breakfast. Lance was already seated so he sat away from him and ate breakfast alone. When he finished, they lined up to go to 'school'. Upon arrival, the teacher handed Keith a folder.

"Your parents brought your homework. When you're done, put it in the cubby with your name at the back."

Keith begrudgingly walked to the round table in the back and sat across from Lance. He opened his file and took out his PreCalc homework and his copied notes, beginning to work the problem sets with a four-function calculator. Lance looked up.

"Math?"

"Yep." Keith responded, not even looking up.

"So you're gay but not telling anyone?" Lance blurted out.

Keith looked up, eyes wide. "What? How do you know?"

"I didn't" Lance laughed. "But now I know."

Keith frowned. Lance's smile dropped.

"Look, man. It's fine. Do your parents know?"

"No one does."

"Aww. Does that mean I'm special?"

"No." Keith said, turning back to his work.

When school was over, they went straight across the hall to the art room. They listened to the radio, which was a luxury. Lance worked on a bracelet from black and red embroidery threads while Lance worked on a blue and yellow one. It was soothing. Other kids were making paintings or playing with air-dry clay. They said nothing, just working silently.

After an hour, neither boy finished but put their projects in a bin with their name on it with sharpie and masking tape. They headed back upstairs. Lunch. Dinner. It was evening. Keith grabbed a phone when it was his turn. He was glad that Lance didn't seem to be anywhere. His parents dropped an index card with numbers from his phone back at home. He called his friend, Hunk.

"Hey." He said.

"Hey." Hunk replied. "How are you feeling?"

Keith scoffed. "Seriously? You sound like my parents."

"Sorry." He apologized. "Everyone at school is wondering where you are."

"What did you say?"

"I didn't say anything but the working rumor is that you ran away."

"Great." Keith sighed. "Look, Hunk. I need a favor."

"Anything."

"Anything?"

"Within reason."

"I'm running away."

"What? You're running away for real?"

"Yeah. I'm counting on you. Can you wait outside the tall, fenced in area? There's a sandpit with a volleyball net. I'm going to climb it."

"I don't know." Hunk said. "You're there for a reason."

Keith groaned. "What happened to 'anything'?"

Hunk sighed. "What you're asking is insane."

"Fine." Keith said, disappointed. "I'll ask Pidge."

"No way." Hunk replied.

"Why?"

"Pidge will say yes."

"Good. Bye." He hung up the phone and quickly dialed. He listened to the ringing until Pidge picked up.

"Hey." She answered. "How are you-"

"Not now." Keith interrupted. "I need your help. I'm running away."

"From... the hospital?"

"Yeah."

"That sounds pretty impossible."

"Not if I have a key card."

"And how are you going to get that?"

"Oh, I'm not. You are."

"What?"

"Come to visiting hours after school tomorrow. I can't get close to a guard, but you can."

Keith heard a voice clearing behind him. It was a worker from the front desk.

"Mr. Kogane, I'm going to need you to hang up and come with me."

Keith felt his face burn red. "I gotta go, Pidge."

"What? Why?"

"I think I just got caught."

"Damn. Good luck."

Keith was led down the hall to the office where he had met with his doctor. A security guard stood by the door and his doctor came in.

"I got a call." He said. "I heard that you were on the phone. Do you want to tell me what that was about?"

Keith shifted nervously. "I was just joking."

"Hm." His doctor said. "Doesn't sound very funny, now does it?"

"Am I in trouble?" Keith asked.

"No." The doctor replied. "Everyone has thought of running away, I'm sure, but you are going to need to be on floor restriction."

"What?"

"This is just for your protection. Brad is going to be your one-on-one."

"Brad?"

"Yes. He is a therapist who works on the front desk. Why don't you go back to your room? He will be there in a minute."

"Ok. Fine." Keith said, glaring at the doctor. "I'll play your game."

"Very well, Mr. Kogane."

Keith walked out of the door and walked back down the hall to his room. Lance was still reading. Brad came in an office chair and kept the door open. Lance looked up and smiled.

"So you finally got yourself a shadow?" He asked. "I'm surprised what is this, day 5?"

"4."

"Even better." Lance laughed. "By the way- don't make your plans to run away on the phone. They monitor your calls."

Keith frowned. "Would have been nice to know earlier."

Lance grinned. "Next time, make your plans during visiting hours."

"McClain-" The guard warned.

"I'm just kidding Brad. What? Did you miss me?"

Brad laughed. "Yeah. Hardly."

Lance frowned. "Boo."

Keith lay back on his bed. "Well. This officially sucks."

"Welcome to the hospital." Lance replied.

"Yeah. Thanks."
