Chapter 12: desisions

We were still a few hours away from Port Royal. Four days had passed and after the second I was allowed on deck. I found out that the room I had been sleeping in when I had woken up had been Jack's room and, seeing as I had been sleeping in Jack's bed the whole time, he had been forced into lying on the floor, which he insisted wasn't as bad as it sounded, but I doubted it. Through out the night I constantly got a feeling that someone was staring at me, but I ignored it.

Elizabeth had come to me a couple of times begging me to give her permission to tell Will about my hometown -aka District 2 - but I had told her that he shouldn't know and it should be something for just us girls to know.

The plans for saving Jack weren't going anywhere either. So far we had come up with absolutely nothing. Sure, we had spent hours trying to work out ways to break him out of prison, somehow cut the rope on the gallows and other things, but none of them turned out to be the plans we wanted. We were also keeping it from Jack, though none of us were sure why.

I was sitting on the railing of the ship, watching the crew go about their work, when Elizabeth came up to me. She sat down on the railing and was silent for a while.

"Do you think we'll actually be able to rescue Jack?" she asked eventually. "Do you think it would be worth it?"

"Yes," I said immediately. "What makes you think that we shouldn't?"

"Well, he's a pirate for one. Who knows what he's done in the past. All the people he could have killed, all the goods he could have stolen. Think about it. He's a criminal."

I sighed. She was right. Jack was a criminal but he hadn't done anything untrustworthy yet. "That was before. Maybe once we save him from his death, we could make him change his ways."

"Well, yes. That's always a possibility." She nodded slowly and stood up. "I have to go and help Will with um..."

"Go I," I said dismissively, and she bobbed her head and went to find Will.

Most of the journey had been like this so far. Everyone (meaning Elizabeth, Will and I) had expressed some doubts and most of our conversations were short.

I leaned further back on the railing and stared up at the sky. Life was a lot more complicated here in the 1700s than it had been in District 2. There it had been wake up and get ready, go to school, got to training, go home and practice for the games a bit more, and then go to sleep. The same routine every day.

Here though, every day was different. You could never know what to expect or when to expect it. Even in the games it was try not to get killed by gamemakers while trying to kill everyone else. Now that I thought about it, this place was a lot more exciting. Maybe I could stay here and get used to all the frills and wigs - none of them for me, of course. I had made up my mind. I  was staying here with Elizabeth.

I jumped up and went to look for her. When I found her, she and Will were talking to Mr. Swann near the stairs to the poop deck.

"... Really, is it?" she was saying when I got there. She saw me and waived me over. "Hello Clove. Come and join us. I was just telling father that I would like to break off my engagement to Mr. Norrington."

Her father looked at her disapprovingly. "Norrington is a fine man. You would do well to marry him."

"I know father, but it just doesn't seem right. I don't really love him. Surely you know that."

"If it wasn't love, then why did you accept his proposal?"

Will took my arm and led me away from the other two. "They have been like that for ages now and it's honestly starting to get on my nerves," he said, lowering his voice slightly.

"But aren't you glad she's breaking off the engagement?" I asked. I would have thought he would have been jumping for joy at the news.

"Well yes. I mean, I never thought they would make a good couple anyway." He shrugged his shoulders. "She could do better than him, and she will." There was a bit of an awkward pause after that.

"Right," I said. "Why don't we go back over there and help her convince Mr. Swann that she could?"

"Uh, yes. Good idea."

We walked back to them to see that their argument had gotten worse. Both had raised their voices somewhat more than was necessary and some sailors who had been passing by looked curiously at them.

"If you don't stop this nonsense right now Elizabeth Swann, I will have you locked in your room for a good two days once we get back to Port Royal!"

"Fine! That would be much more pleasant than marrying that scum!"

"Elizabeth! Did you just call Commodore Norrington scum?"

"Yes! And you," she continued, pointing an accusing finger at her father, "Cannot stop me from doing so, seeing as you are no better." Truthfully, I didn't really see that as much of a reason.

I slowly lowered Elizabeth's finger and said as politely as I could, "Please um... Governor Swann. You can see that she doesn't have her heart set on marrying Norrington. The only reason she agreed was so Will could be saved."

"Why not see if she changes her mind once we get back to Port Royal, " Will suggested. "Maybe she will. Best not tell Norrington though. Not yet, anyway."

Swann seemed to consider this for a while. "Okay then. We'll see if she changes her mind."

Elizabeth looked as though she were almost glowing with happiness as her father walked away. "Thank-you Clove, Will."

"Your welcome," Will said, smiling.

"I think it was a good idea," I said. "But do you really dislike him that much?"

"It's not that I dislike him," she informed me. "I just don't feel the same way about him as he does me. I don't want to marry someone I don't love."

"Fair enough. Elizabeth, you know how you said it would be okay if I stayed at your house once we got back? Well I would like that."

"Really? I thought you would have wanted to go back to Pan- your home," she said, quickly covering up her mistake. "From what you told me it sounded amazing!"

"Well, compared to this place it's actually pretty boring," I admitted.

"Okay then. I should go tell father."

"You might want to wait a while," Will said, looking over at Mr. Swann who looked thoroughly annoyed.

"Good idea," she said. "Well, we've still got a long journey ahead of us and I have a very tough decision to make. I'd better go and think about it in my room."

"Good idea," I said, and waved her off.

"Do you think she'll actually change her mind?" Will asked.

"I doubt it. I certainly would if I were her."

Once we reached Port Royal a few hours later, everyone was eager to be back on dry land again, especially me. As much as I wanted to help unload the cargo, Elizabeth insisted on taking me straight up to her place to help me settle in.

Sorry guys! I haven't uploaded for forever! I'm really sorry and feel really bad :(   If you want to make me feel better though and show me you understand... you could always vote for this chapter and leave a comment...
