My third period class droned on and on, the teacher doing nothing but lecturing me the entire time. I glanced at the clock and my heart skipped a beat. Only five more minutes! As the minute hand drew closer and closer to it's mark, I got more and more jumpy. Once the bell had finally rung, I sprang out of my seat and all but leapt for the door. I ran towards the cafeteria and quickly got into line, and began to scan the room for Piko. I didn't see him, and I got to the front of the line quickly. I got my food, a sandwhich, and walked over to our usual table, all the while scanning the room for him.

Just as I was about to sit down, a blob of white caught my attention. I saw Piko walking towards the tables with his food. I waved at him, grinning and laughing slightly at my foolish giddyness. (A/N is that even a word...?) Piko's eyes caught the motion, and he looked over at me, stopping for a moment to consider me, a quizzical look painted on his face. I stopped waving for a second, my smile faltering. He stood regarding me quietly for a moment longer, before taking a small bite of his sandwhich, turning, and walking towards another table teeming with other students. He sat down and smiled at them. One of the students there was the upperclassman I had bumped into on the day of the roof incident. He pointed at me and asked Piko something, and he shrugged, the table erupting into laughter.

My knees faltered, and I slowly sunk down onto the seat, unable to support myself anymore. What's going on? Why would he have... It can't have been because I was out for so long that he...? Thoughts raced through my mind as I tried to make sense of what I had just seen. I dropped my head to stare at my food, feeling as though I had just been punched in the stomach. I picked up my sandwhich and began eating, resolving to talk to Piko after we were excused from the cafeteria.

The rest of lunch didn't improve, and a burning pit began to develop in my stomach. I knew that I wouldn't be able to sleep if I didn't speak to Piko, but worry knotted my stomach at the thought of speaking with him. It didn't help anything that Thadelia's cryptic words echoed in my head whenever the issue of Piko surfaced in my mind. I stood up to throw my food away after the bell for our dismissal had rung, and passed by Piko, who was on his way out.

I stretched out my hand, lightly grabbing his arm, and time seemed to stop. There was motion around us, but time seemed to stop as I waited for Piko to turn around. He turned his head to look at me expectantly.

"Uh... Um My-my um, I mean you- I..." I stammered, suddenly unsure of what to say. I finally came up with the right words and took a deep breath before continuing. "Why did you sit with them? I thought that you would..." I dropped my gaze and muttered, "sit with me..." I looked back up after a little, only to see that Piko seemed really confused.

"What do you mean? Why would I sit with you?" He paused, as my heart shattered, the pieces scattering on the floor only to be trampled upon by the passing students, "I don't even know who you are." My eyes widened, and now it was my turn to be confused.

"What do you mean? Don't you remember me, and..." I hesitated, panicking a little at the memory, "on the roof..." I trailed off, searching his face for any sign of recognition. How can he not remember? Does he just want to get rid of me? I felt tears welling up, but I willed them away.

"What happened on the roof?" Piko looked genuinely confused, but he apparently saw the tears I struggled to fight off because he bagan again, "Hey, um look, hey it's okay- I didn't mean to- did I say something? Look I'm realy sorry, but I don't remember you." For a moment, he hesitated, and something flickered in his eyes like a passing shadow. He hesitated, as if he were about to say something, but he didn't.

"Oh no, it isn't something you said I just, I... I um- I thought that you were someone else, but I guess... I was wrong." I said, my statement having a deeper meaning. I turned to leave, muttering a small thank you, and he didn't stop me.

That Piko isn't the same Piko as before the roof accident... I thought. What did they do to him? Piko wouldn't ever be around the "popular" students. I sighed, resolving to go to my room instead of the main floor. I should ask Thadelia about him.

But she said not to talk about him. What am I supposed to do?! I fell onto my bed, feeling empty and crushed. Why had all of this happened to me, of all people? As soon as I had opened up to someone, they got ripped away from me, and there wasn't anything I could do about it. There had been one other time that I had opened up to someone, but I thought that Piko would have been different, and that things may have turned out beter. Looking back at our first meeting now, I think I acted ridiculously. I had been far too trusting.

Just then, I heard a knocking. It was very soft, but I heard it nonetheless. I got up off of my bed and crossed the distance to my door in a few quick strides. I gazed out through the small peephole, seeing Thadelia outside. A slight smile danced on my lips as I opened the door. I welcomed her in and sat down on my bed, offering her a seat next to me.

"Before you tell me anything, I have a question I need answered," I looked at her as I saw her purse her lips, but she nodded after a moment, "Why is Piko in the HC?" Originally I had wanted to ask her what they had done to him while I was out, but I figured that this question would be better for her to answer. Thadelia looked at me, trying to decide whether or not she wanted to answer the question.

"I thought I told you not to talk about him," Thadelia scolded. I opened my mouth to protest, but she put her hand up and continued. "Piko came here a little before you did. He was given to us by a computer programmer that said he had 'picked the wretched thing up off the streets'. We told him that this was a special facility and that we couldn't take him. The programmer looked worried at this, but he went on to say that he had made Piko.

"Of course we all didn't believe this. A.I. of that high grade was unheard of. The programmer then began to tell us of how he had gone about the process and that their 'species' was the Vocaloid. He talked about their potential as if he were going to rule the world the next day. Thusly, we all wondered why he would give up this kind of technology so readily. He hastily explained that he had no use for him, and then moved on to talk about the details of the transaction. Then, well... Piko's been with us ever since."

I felt my jaw gradually falling, unable to take in all of the information at once. Piko... Utatane Piko is a- a computer program?!

"Do- Does Piko know? I mean, does he know wha- what he is?" I stammered, trying to make sense of it all.

"I'm not sure what of all the programmer told Piko, but he hasn't showed any signs of knowing anything - at least as far as we can tell."

"But how- I'm sorry, I've bothered you enough. I think I need some time to take this all in," I said, looking at Thadelia, "Thank you for answering, though." She nodded knowingly, and stood up to leave. She heditated at the door, wanting to say someting, but deciding against it. She shut the door softly behind her, and I fell backwards to lay down onto my bed, shutting my eyes and trying to focus my thoughts.

Piko is a computer program... I thought softly. I shook my head slightly, unable to believe it. As I laid there, I remembered something, something that I had dismissed as a dream, but now that it was put into context, made perfect sense.

Piko is a computer program.
