I looked up from my usual sandwich and caught Piko staring at me. I slowed my chewing, giving him a quizzical look, but he just shrugged his shoulders and took a bite of his salad. I shrugged slightly as well, refocusing on my sandwich. I glanced up with my head still down, and sure enough, Piko was staring at me. I dropped my gaze again, trying to make sure he didn't see me look at him. I raised my head again, staring at him expectantly. He opened and closed his mouth a couple of times before finally shutting it and stuffing more salad into his mouth. I continued to gaze at him expectantly, and he was slightly startled to see me watching him. We stared at each other for a while, each expecting the other to speak, until finally Piko sighed heavily and reached into the folds of his long shirt. He dug around for a moment until apparently finding the searched-for object. He hesitated for a moment, raising his gaze once again until our eyes connected. I squirmed under the extended eye contact, and turned my face away. As I did so, Piko reached his empty hand across the table and turned my face back to meet his gaze again. I shuddered slightly at the contact, but held his gaze this time. To my surprise, Piko leaves his hand to rest on my face while he speaks.
"What I'm about to give you is extremely important to me. I'm giving it to you to keep safe. Only look at it if you absolutely have to. You have to keep it safe in case-" here he choked on his words. I could see tears beginning to swell in his eyes, threatening to pour out. I slowly raised my hand and placed it over his, still resting on my face. I twitched nervously, unsure if this contact was alright. When Piko didn't pull his hand away, I finally spoke.
"Hey, if you need me to keep it safe, then that's fine. I mean, I won't ask... Not that I'm not interested, but I mean..." I slowly concluded, dropping my gaze and slowly pulling back, trying to not make any quick movements so as not to get the wrong idea across. He got the idea, and slowly pulled his hand out of his pocket. It was clenched around an object, and I wasn't entirely sure of what it was, until he turned his hand over and opened it. I glanced up, questioning, but the look on his face said it all. I knew what I had to do. I grabbed the small object, and put it in my pocket.
I glanced up at Piko again, and he had a faint smile of relief dancing across his lips. I smiled slightly as well, my chest swelling with happiness at being able to reassure him in some way; to be able to help him carry a burden.
"I promise." I stated simply, not wanting to use too many words. Piko simply smiled in return.

Ugh this chapter is so short >~< anyways I needed it because there was a missing element and it had to be included in some way so this actually worked out beautifully.
