~
I opened my eyes, feeling better after a night's sleep. I looked towards my door, and noticed a note in my "mailbox". I quickly got up and strode over. I hastily tugged at the ribbon wrapped around the note rolled up like a scroll. My eyes devoured the page, searching for something other than the dreaded news of a new class. I sighed. I was to report to the music room, by 9:00 A.M. for a new music course. I paused a moment, realizing that I was already halfway through a music course. I guess that I was getting transferred.
It only took me a few minutes to get ready, so I had about 15 minutes to myself before I had to be in the music room. I decided I would wander around the building, and maybe even visit that old elevator. Everyone in the Health Center is kept on one floor. There aren't very many of us here, so space isn't an issue. Everyone knows that the building has many, many floors; we just aren't allowed on them.
As I walk, I look at the scenery around me. Nearly everything on our floor of the Health Center is white. It really bothers me. After living as much of my life as I had here, I had gotten really tired of white really fast. Sure, it gave the floor a chic, modern impression, but it's also boring and dull. I used to daydream that I would run through all the rooms and halls and just paint everything, even if it meant simply hurling paint at the walls. But it was beautiful. The colors were so vibrant and alive, and I would paint a sunset, in my room. It was filled with beautiful oranges, deep rich reds, and bright yellows. There would be hills, a vibrant spring green, dotted with bushes, flowers, all kinds and colors, and trees. I slowly drug myself back into reality, noting the time before I sped off towards the music room, 2 minutes before nine.
I arrived perfectly on time, as usual. I quietly opened the door, seeing who was in the room before entering. My previous music instructor wasn't there, which was to be expected, since I was starting a new class. What I wasn't expecting was the Board.
What are they doing here? I asked myself.
"Hello ___," a man in a clean lab coat with a bright red tie began. "As I'm sure you are aware, we are here for your annual assessment, to ensure you have the best learning experience." It took all of my willpower to keep myself from snorting, but I had learned to hold my tongue long ago.
The first time I came here, I was reckless, especially with what I said. After some of what they considered "discipline", I learned the value of silence; I also learned that they thought that they had broken me into a sweet, gullible child. Ha, they'd be in for a surprise.
So instead, I smiled and asked, "What will you be assesing me on?"
A woman seated two seats from the left of the red tie man chuckled, "We're in the music room, aren't we?" Her colleagues looked at her, and she cut her laugh short, clearing her throat.
"We will be assessing you on a variety of subjects, most prominently, music." The man in the red tie corrected. He must be in charge, I noted.
~After the test~
The five members of the Board nodded to me, and my Caretaker, who had slipped in sometime during the test. My Caretaker, by the name of Thadelia, escorted me to the cafeteria. I got my food, sat down at my usual table, and began "eating". I say this because I'm not entirely sure that I "eat" anymore. It's become too methodical for me; I don't even have to think about it anymore. I look up from my food, my eyes sweeping across the room, something I don't normally do. There are more people than I remember... Suddenly, my gaze fell upon a boy. He was very pale and wore a long white dress-shirt (I wasn't quite sure WHAT it was) with black accents, and, was that... a USB cord tail? He had white hair with a funny little piece that curled up, and made him look rather adorable. His eyes were a bright blue, the only splash of color to him. As I marveled at the boy, who I hadn't noticed before, surprisingly enough, his gaze met mine. Our eyes locked for a split second, and then I dropped my gaze to my food, nibbling on my sandwich, my face burning red. I had NEVER been caught staring before. I chanced a glance up a few minutes later, but he wasn't there. Just when I was about to scour the room, a lunch tray thunked down on my table. I whipped my head up, and saw the boy sitting down across from me. I instantly dropped my head once again, groping for my sandwich, anything, to keep me occupied.
"Hello." The boy said softly.
That was the first word anyone - excepting staff - had ever said to me.
