[ chapter eight! ]

mike stood there, staring at the girl as his mind goes completely blank. her short brown hair fell just above her shoulders as it brushed her cheeks slightly in the breeze. her huge brown eyes softened as they looked into his, and he was lost for words. he was in awe. she didn't need to try, she was so beautiful in his eyes.

"m-mike? what's going on?" jane asks, interrupting his thoughts.

"i- i just wanted to see if you were okay" mike says quickly, he was being truthful. sure, he wanted to find out if she was lying or not, but he also needed to know that she was okay. he knew hopper was angry at her, and he'd never let jane be hurt by him.

"mike i'm fine- but i can't hang out, remember?" she says as she walks down the steps towards him.

"y-yeah, i know, i'll go now" mike says with a small smile as he begins to turn around.

"mike- wait." jane says quickly, grabbing his arm to stop him.

"yeah?" he says quietly, looking at the girl softly.

however jane didn't say anything. she didn't need to. instead she wrapped her arms around him tightly and hugged him. she felt safe in his arms, and for once she felt as if they finally understood each other.

mike stood there frozen, before smiling to himself and resting his chin on her head, hugging her back tightly.

"so- you and jane looked pretty close the other day" max says teasingly as she nudged mike's arm.

"shut it" mike snaps, rolling his eyes at max as he slouches in his chair slowly.

"are you two like- dating now?" will asks curiously as he leans closer to mike with a grin on his face.

"what?! no! will you all stop asking me these stupid questions when you already know the answers!" mike says grumpily as he sits upright in his chair.

lucas and dustin look at each other before sniggering at mike's angry outburst. mike notices this and immediately turns towards them angrily.

"what's so funny? huh?" mike asks furiously as he glares at the pair with his eyebrows pinched together.

"nothing dude, you're just getting super angry for no reason and it's funny to watch" lucas explains calmly, trying to hold in a laugh as dustin laughs quietly to himself.

"where is jane anyway?" max asks as she scans the cafeteria for her. mike begins to look too, until he notices she isn't there.

"shouldn't you know where she is mike? seeing as she's your girlfriend and all?" dustin asks jokingly to the moody teenage boy sat in front of him.

mike doesn't reply, instead he stands up and walks away from the table, making sure to shove dustin and lucas in their backs as he walks past.

"hey? where are you going?" will shouts after mike as mike walks further away from the table.

"to find jane!" mike yells back as he exits the cafeteria with a spring in his step.

mike knew that if jane wasn't with the party she would be in two other places. mr clarke's classroom or the library.

he quickly makes his way to mr clarke's classroom, dodging the loud teenagers that stood in front of their lockers.

he walks up to mr clarke's classroom, attempting to peer in through the window before knocking loudly.

mr clarke opens the door almost straight away, gesturing mike to come in.

"hey mike! are you okay?" mr clarke asks as he sits down at his desk.

however mike was distracted. he notices straight away that jane wasn't in his room, so where was she?

"w-where is jane?" mike asks worriedly as he turns to face mr clarke.

"jane? i haven't seen her all day. i don't think she's in school today is she?" mr clarke says with a small shrug as he leans back in his desk chair.

"oh- ok. i was just curious to where she was" mike says quickly before running out of the room, leaving mr clarke confused.

after mike discovered jane want in the library either, he became concerned. jane never missed school.

the second the final bell rang for the school day, mike jumped out from his seat, quickly swinging his bag over his back as he ran outside to his bike. he didn't even bother to wait for the others, he was too worried about jane in that moment.

he cycled as fast as he possibly could, his breathing became heavy as he began to feel more and more tired.

he didn't know why he was so worried, he just was. he felt oddly protective of the girl, as if she was fragile and could break at any moment.

maybe he cared? but mike wasn't one to admit feelings or even think about them, he tried to push all that away.

he finally pulled up outside the cabin, throwing his bike carelessly on the floor as he runs up the steps leading to the front door.

as he knocked loudly on the door he notices hopper's car was missing from the patch where it is usually parked.

had jane and hopper gone out somewhere? why didn't she tell me? mike questions as he continues to wait for the door to open.

the door doesn't open, instead the whole cabin remains silent as mike waits patiently.

after another few minutes of waiting, mike comes to the conclusion that jane and hopper must not be in. however as he begins to walk down the steps towards his bike, loud sobs can be heard from inside.

"jane?! are you in there?!" mike shouts as he runs back towards the front door and begins to bang on the door forcefully.

no response.

mike immediately begins to panic, it sounded exactly like jane, so it must be her. he walks over to the nearest window and begins to knock quickly, trying to peer in through the curtains that were shielding his view.

"jane!-"

mike's calling was suddenly interrupted by the sound of the door opening to his left. he quickly turns to see jane stood there, and his heart dropped.

her face was drained of colour, her eyes bloodshot red. a single streak of blood ran down from her nose as she stares at the boy blankly.

mike's mind begins to race.

what happened to her?
