Dustin
Screams of terror fill the night. Vampires run and destroy everything, burning all they touch with torches. I sit by and watch in horror as I am helpless and cannot do a thing. A scream I know sounds behind me. Aithne is being pulled into a burning house. "Dustin! Help me, Dustin!" My legs are slow as I try to run to save her. Each step is like walking in quicksand, not moving anywhere.
"Aithne! Aithne, I'm coming!" I call out but she doesn't hear me. I reach for her out-stretched hand but grasp empty air.
"The king has made himself known. Now I can finish him once and for all!" I turn around and see the lead Vampire. He was wearing a pitch black cape that billowed around him. I snarl at him. "I'll kill you!"
"Your Highness! Wake up!"
"Try if you can. You are no match for me!" He laughed evilly at my slow pace as I charged at him in my wolf form, teeth bared.
"Your Majesty, please wake up!"
"Dustin," I turn and see Aithne smiling at me with open arms. "It's time to awaken."
"Fool! You are asleep and you shall remain that way forever!" The lead Vampire lunged at me.
I jumped up and snatched Dahlia by the arms and snarled. She gasped in fright but held my gaze. As the sleep wore off, I saw that I held her tightly and was ready to rip off her arms. I tossed her away from me, fell to the ground, phased into my wolf form, and jumped out the window in a matter of three seconds.
I ran like a mad man, trying to clear my head from my dream. It was all a dream, it was all a dream, it was all- I yelped as my foot caught a tree root and I landed nose first onto the ground. Not bothering to move, I layed there on the ground. Images from my dream replayed over and over in my head. The one that stuck out the most was Aithne telling me to wake up.
A branch broke under a heavy foot. I ignored it. Suddenly, I was rolled onto my right side. I whined, low and hurt as my paw hit the ground. I looked up- and up and up- to a shadowed Centaur figure. The figure stared at me while I stared back.
He tapped my right paw with his hoof. I cried out in pain and very quickly found out that it was broken. The Centaur picked me up by the scruff of my neck and rested me on his back. He kept one hand on me as he galloped farther into the forest. I watched each patch of grass swish past us as I was carried away. My paw had set and healed wrong and now it was causing even more pain. I winced every time my paw bounced against the side of the Centaur.
After a while, we slowed to a medium trot then a walk. The grass and trees were much greener here than I've ever seen before. The sun shined through very small openings in the leaves. I slowly phased back to my human form and waited patiently to be set back down.
We reached a cottage made out of mud, clay, and tree branches. The Centaur stopped before it and opened the make-shift door. The room was roughly the size of the stables back at the palace. A small fire pit had been dug out in the middle of the room. The Centaur walked over to a pile of blankets and set me down on it.
"Stay." He held his palm up to me and walked over to a chest across the room. He rummaged through it for a while before pulling out a form fitting brown shirt and dark green bottoms. I looked down at myself and realized that my clothes had been ripped to shreds when I had phased. With my good hand, I tore away the rest of the scraps and threw them into the dug out fire pit.
