I awoke in a strange place. Where was I? The bed I was on was soft but needed to be fluffed. The room had soft yellow walls and the floor was a light hard wood surface. Nothing looked familiar. I propped myself up onto my elbow and looked out the window and saw a town bursting with energy in the afternoon sun. What town was it?

I quickly sat up  and stood. Foggy memories swam into my head and I collapsed back onto the bed. I remembered Aithne and her mom telling me that she went to Ester and I followed. I was dead tired and couldn't move a muscle to save myself. I remembered the man who brought me to the inn. He had ordered a room for two. I had fallen down the stairs. Just then, my back felt sore.

More memories. The man who brought me here was named Hale. He had a weird scent to him but that might have been because I was almost asleep. I rubbed my head with my fingers. I had a killer headache. I went to the bathroom and filled the sink with cool water. After I found a rag, I dunked it in the water and went back to the bed and laid it across my eyes.

A light knock sounded at the door. I groaned. "Come in." It creaked open and shut quickly. I peeked out from under the cloth to see who it was. Hale stood in front of the door with a slightly worried look on his face. "How are you feeling, Your Majesty?" He asked.

I sat up slowly this time. "Doing alright. Just a headache." I responded. I kept the rag pressed to my forehead. Hale's face became more worried and he pressed his back closer to the door, as if giving me space, or putting space between us. "Are you alright?" I asked. Hale put up a smile for two and a half seconds before he said, "Fine and dandy."

I took the rag from my head and stood up. Then it hit me. A sickening sweet smell drifted up my nose. I sniffed and covered it with the rag I still held in my hand. I quickly opened a window to air out the stench that was burning my nose even through the rag. The scent didn't dissipate.

"What is that awful-" Then I gazed at Hale who had a frightened look to his calm face. "You!" I slammed the window shut so no one could overhear what I was going to say. I took three long strides and was in front of Hale. His scent was stronger here than anywhere else in the room. "Why are you here?!"

Hale swallowed and pretended to cough so he could hide covering his nose. "Mind taking a step back, please, sir?" He said with a shaky voice.

"Answer my question!" I roared. Hale simply said, "There are other people at this inn."

I got into his face and said in a whisper, "You better tell me why you are here or so help me, I will rip you limb from limb, Vampire!" I said the name like a curse. We were about the same height so Hale looked me straight in the eyes and said, "Two months ago, I broke away from the Vampires. I have never been one for violence and they eat that stuff up for breakfast." He spoke slowly and carefully, knowing that his life was on a very thin line.

My nose was starting to burn like crazy. "So, then what?!" I snarled.

Hale backed impossibly closer to the door. "So then I started to wander around Grendrellah, looking for something to do that didn't involve violence and hatred. I knew Zahndrik would not approve so I have been keeping a low profile." He took a deep breath and continued. "Dryes, the Dwarf at the weapons shop, took me in and made me his apprentice. He trained me to know all of the weapons names and how to tell which one was which. I proved myself worthy and he kept me, completely aware of my background."
