I stared at the unusual creature in disbelief as it released an unusual noise that sounded similar to the click of a dolphin but also as if it were some beautiful singing voice.

"What are you?" I whispered quietly, unsure of whether I should move closer to the unusual creature. Could this thing be what I thought it was? Was it what I had read about in childrens stories and mythology?

Was this creature a mermaid?

The creature released the same unusual noise but this time it sounded deeper. It was as if the creature was as interested in me as I was in it. It began to circle me, and gripped my hair in its webbed fingers before analysing it more closely. It gave my hair a quick tug and when I shouted in pain, it released it. Clearly it understood a cry in pain.

The creature gently lifted my hand in it and looked between my fingers, clearly wondering why they weren't webbed like its fingers were.

"Unbelievable," I whispered as I took its hand with my spare hand and began to look at the webbing between its fingers. "Are you what I think you are?"

The creatures eyes widened as it seemed to analyse me even closer. It looked at the bikini top I was wearing and seemed confused by my clothing. Gracefully, it touched the material tail wrapped around my legs, holding them together and seemed to grow even more confused before it looked closer at my face and then into my eyes.

Something about the way the creature looked at me, that he didn't mean me any danger. I lifted my hand to touch the creature but it flinched away for a moment, before allowing me to look at even closer.

"You're magnificent," I whispered breathlessly.

Suddenly, the creature lifted its hand so that its palm faced me and I couldn't help but mimick the action. Our hands touched and suddenly, it felt as if something had clicked inside of me and the feeling I felt towards the sea grew stronger. My love for it and its calling to me grew ever stronger.

No longer did I care that night had fallen around us and engulfed us in darkness. The full moon gave me the light I needed to see the magnificent creature before me.
