(Y/N)
He was so incredibly different. There were no fish-like properties and his skin felt smooth without being oily. There was no way to see his eyes clearly, and he didn't speak. But something attracted you to him. The distance closed between you and your lips met.
Then...
"Y/N. Wake up, dear!" your mother's voice chirped, dragging the blanket off your body.
"Jeez, mom... It's Saturday..." you groaned as you rubbed your eye.
"That doesn't matter! It's always good to get up early and go to bed early! Just look what it did for me" she said, making a rather dramatic pose.
"Mom, you're only like 80... I don't think it mattered if you slept like that or not..." you yawn.
"Oh shush!" she tossed you some clothing, which slowly drifted over to you.
"..."
"What's wrong, Y/N?" she asked.
"Well... don't you think I'm a bit too old for carp scales..?" you said, carefully.
"What are you suggesting..?" she raised an eyebrow.
"Well... my friends have clothes of betta fish.." you continued.
"Absolutely not! Such clothing is far too expensive" she snapped.
"Then how about fabric..? From the surface..?" you tried.
"... we'll see... just get dressed..." she said with a sigh as she left the room. You glanced at the shiny clothing, rolling your eyes as you proceeded to get dressed. Then you took your bag made out of sea lettuce over your shoulder and made your way downstairs. As you passed the dining room, your mother called out to you.
"Aren't you staying for breakfast, Y/N?"
You simply shook your head.
"No, I think I'm gonna see if Ereza and Maiya are up," you said as you opened the door.
"Alright, but be careful! Remember to watch out for Gigantea's tentacles if you go outside the city!" she shouted.
"I will, I will" you replied as you closed the door behind you, swimming along the streets. They were already packed with people, seeing as the markets had already opened. Looking up, you saw the gigantic, pink body of the jellyfish. Gigantea. A creature so big it covered your entire city and kept unwanted pests away. Inside the body, you could just barely see something moving. That must have been one of the prisoners, a sinner or two.
You didn't know which laws they had crossed but, whichever it was, they deserved to serve their time.
As you continued to swim, you let one of your hands stroke over the scales of a catfish that passed by. It suddenly swam faster as a spurdog came chasing after it. You chuckled a bit as you passed a store that sold baby squids of different kinds. A rotten wooden sign displayed a manta ray painted by green sea paint. You sat down on a small stone bench, brushing aside some loose kelp. The water felt unusually fresh today. Perhaps this was to be a good day.
You kept waiting until you heard the familiar sound of Seriye's cheerful singing. He appeared in the distance, riding on the giant manta ray as usual. What had he named her? Spr...sprenei..Sespeneiya or something. The two stopped in front of you, Seriye waving to you. You smiled as you took a few coins out of your bag, carefully handing them to him. One began to float upwards, but he was quick to grab it.
"Seems like that's a new one, eh?" he chuckled as he put it into a little sack at his waist, tying a knot.
"Yeah, it's good not having to deal with it anymore" you replied, carefully sitting on the back of the giant creature.
"Where to?" he asked.
"Just outside the walls, please" you replied.
"Going to meet with your friends again?"
"Yeah"
He nodded and patted Se-...whatever she's called before she began to move again. You took the time to stare up at Gigantea again. Behind her body laid the surface, a world that once had belonged to your people. For short durations, you had stuck your head through to see what it was like. But all you saw was more water.
You let out a slight sigh.
"What's the matter, Y/N-eli?" he asked.
"I just... sometimes I wonder if there's more to life than what's underwater.," you answered.
"Hm... I suppose we all think about it at times. But the surface is dangerous for us, you know?" he said.
"I know, I know..." you pouted slightly, lying on your back.
"Had any more unusual dreams lately?" he asked. You thought for a bit before shrugging.
"I honestly haven't been remembering them lately. They're just...gone"
"Well don't think about it too much. They're just dreams anyways" he said with a smile.
"..yeah..."
At the rest of the trip, you kept quiet, simply listening to Seriye's cheerful songs. You turn over on your side, careful to not move too much on the manta ray's rough skin.
.
.
.
"Y/N, wake up!" Seriye whispered, gently nudging your shoulder. You opened your eyes slowly.
"Oh.. did I fall asleep..?" you asked with a yawn. He nods with a laugh.
"Is my singing that soothing, huh?" he asked. You shrugged and got off.
"I'll see you some other time," you said, waving as you swam past two tentacles. One was tied to a stone hook in order to help keep Gigantea anchored. You made sure to avoid them, swimming over the edge before diving further down. Underneath laid another part of the town. Not as many lived there for some reason. Sure, it was dark but the place was covered in beautifully glowing algae along with other creatures of light.
You swam through a small ring that hung from the ceiling as you made your way towards one of the houses. Maiya's.
As you were to kick on it, the door was opened. Maiya was seen. She flinched as she saw you.
"How long have you been here, Y/N?" she asked.
"Just came" you replied, placing your foot on the ground.
"Oh, great. Ereza and I were planning to go out and eat. Of course, we got a spot for a third one" she stuck out her tongue.
"Oh please, you'll always have space for me, whether you want it or not" you joked. She made a dramatic sigh.
"Alas, we must be cursed," she said with a dramatic pose. You chuckled.
"C'mon! Let's just get Ereza and go eat! I skipped breakfast!" you said, pulling her along.
"Yeah, yeah"
