━━━━"Kendra, wake up, we're here."
Rays of sunshine blind Kendra as she squints her eyes open from her nap. Sitting up straight in her seat, Kendra looks around her surroundings and groans. The car is parked in the parking lot of Kendra's new school. Kids are rushing around the front of the school greeting one another after the long summer away from each other, Kendra couldn't help but feel sad for herself because she's all alone for her sophomore year.
"Do I have to go?" Kendra asks her dad who only chuckles.
"Yeah, it's the first day of school." Kendra's dad chuckles and pats the top of her head as if she was a dog.
"Yeah, but I know no one here." Kendra groans as she swings her head back onto her head rest.
"That's why you get out of this car and meet new people. It's the first day of school, nothing will go wrong." Kendra's dad tries to encourage her.
"Anything can go wrong Pa, anything."
"Stop being so pessimistic, now get out of this car before I'm late for work."
"Fineeeee" Kendra sighs as she opens up her door before stepping out of the car.
After shutting the car door, Kendra takes in a deep breath before taking her first step towards her new school. But before she could take her second step, her dad calls out to her.
"Yeah?" Kendra asks as she whips her head around too face her father.
"Your mom would be proud."
The simple sentence was able to make Kendra's heart break and melt back together all at once. Kendra's mom died in a car accident over a year ago, which caused her father and her to move out of their old town and into the city of Everett for a new start away from pitied eyes.
With a sad smile, Kendra's father pulls out of his parking spot and off to work. Kendra Then takes one big deep breath in and then out to try and stop the tears from falling down her face.
"You got this Ken, you got this." Kendra mumbles to herself before walking towards the front entranace of the school.
No one spared her a glance when walking through the front doors of the school, and Kendra couldn't be anymore grateful. As steady as she can with the huge crowds of people, Kendra navigates her way through the school and to her first class with her schedule already embedded in her mind.
♥
Kendra's first two classes were nothing special. Maths and then chem right after, Kendra was absolutely bored out of her mind. But since her new school only allows for four classes a day, which change out in the next semester, Kendra has lunch right between her second and third period classes.
Kendra has yet to make any friends. She's sat through her classes with her head down and ears open as the teachers explain the day to day class rules. To any on lookers, Kendra didn't seem too approachable, so Kendra was left alone for the most part.
Choosing not to sit in the cafeteria where everyone has a seat with their selected group of friends, Kendra decides to sit by herself on a picnic table outside. Dropping her backpack beside her, Kendra pulls out an apple and starts to eat while plugging in her ear buds to her phone. Kendra scrolls through Instagram while listening to music, every so often mumbling a lyric and taking a bite from her apple.
Just five minutes later, someone takes a seat across the picnic bench from Kendra. Lifting her head to face her new company, she's faced with a boy who has the most welcoming smiles Kendra has ever seen. Kendra couldn't help but flash him a small smile in return.
"Whatcha listening to?" The boy asks as he motions with his head towards Kendra's phone.
"Music." Kendra says with a challenging smirk.
"What song?"
"Don't worry about it."
"Is that the name of the song, or are you telling me off?"
"The second option."
The boy lets out a small chuckle and shakes his head. Kendra took that moment to take a once over of his face. He's got a slight baby face giving him the cute look, but there's no doubt he'll grow out of it, and Kendra can only imagine what he would look like. He's got a few freckles scattered across his face and light greenish eyes that turn to blue depending on the way the sun hits them, and he's got floppy brown hair that Kendra can only guess is the softest hair she's seen. Yup it's official, Kendra's got herself a crush and she doesn't even know his name.
The two take a small second to just smile towards each other and take in each others company. After a few seconds, the boy decides to break the surprisingly comfortable silence.
"I'm Carter Hart." Carter says as he sticks out a hand for Kendra to shake.
"I'm Kendra Ponce." Kendra says as she takes his giant hands into her small ones.
"Well Kendra, I think we'll be great friends." Carter says with a smirk before releasing Kendra's hand.
Kendra only smiles in return and nods her head in agreement before thinking in her head:
I really hope so.
