Twenty-Six

Day turned to night. I laid down with my towel curled up to warm myself. The gentle winds blew across in all directions.

"Aww, he looks so cute when he curls up like that." Ashleen said.

I sighed in relief as the fire crackled softly in front of me.

Everyone lied down in relief knowing that all of us are safe and composed after saving my brother. The crickets chirped quietly, like white noise. Suddenly, I hear some rustling in the trees above me.

"What's that? Rustling?" I asked confused.

"Huh? Rustling? I don't hear anyth-" Father was cut off and the rustling was rougher and a tiny bit louder.

"What the hell is that?" Wolf asks.

I stood up slowly trying to not make any noise. I signaled everyone to shut up and no slight traces of noise. Everyone else stood up slowly and quietly. Then, a tail stuck out of the trees and bushes.

'That doesn't look like a tail! Wait, why is it long?' i thought.

The tail became more visible as it stuck out more. The arms and legs are out too, also long. Then the being jumped out of the bush and landed hard on me. The thing screeched louder. I pushed it out of me while it's trying to scratch me.

"What the fuck is that?" Ashleen asked having a shiver on her spine.

Then, more strange beings that look the same chased us. We all ran for our lives at this point.

I fell to the ground as I lost stamina gradually. The mutts walks closer and closer to me. It snarled and the teeth were yellow. The pungent odor of dirt and grime gave off immediately traveled to my nose. It pounces on me and I wrestle with one while kicking and thrusting my arms and elbows to deflect them. Punch, pow, kick.

"Leaping lizards, they're powerful!" I exclaimed.

Then, I heard running that got louder and louder as it gets close. More mutts pile over me and my hopes of surviving decreased. I shed tears as the scratches sting me harshly.

'Is this over? End of my life? Die young?' I thought, 'Hopeless...hopeless...hopeless.'
