Bane's POV

It had been a couple days since I became alpha. I tried to distance myself from the hunters and campers but that doesn't really work when you have a huge group of wolves following you around.

They're actually pretty cool but the only reason I became alpha was so the demigods couldn't kill me. Kill me...you get an angry pack of elite killer wolves.

I was staying at camp. I had obviously tried to sneak off but as I said before that's really hard to do with wolves watching your every step.

Eventually I got ride of them and decided to run off to town. When I was far enough away I shifted into my human-ish form.

"Aww," I groaned. I hadn't been in my human form in forever. I looked in the reflection of a puddle but a monster stared back at me.

With my fangs and my claws, if only I could find that stone-

"It can't be."

I stiffened instantly. I recognized that voice.

"Hera," I growled, spinning around to find the queen goddess staring at me in awe.

"And here I was enjoying my day when all of a sudden you walk over," She smiled a cruel smile, "How has it been going...Perseus Jackson?"

I growled once again.

"I do not go by that name goddess. It is Bane. Not Perseus. Not Percy. Bane."

I remembered everything she had done to my wise girl. I wasn't going to let her off that easy.

It might of been my eyes but I swore I saw her expression soften.

"You suffer greatly," She said in a sad tone, "I can see how much it pains you...to be what you are."

Her voice almost sounded sympathetic. But she was right. I hated waking up everyday just knowing I could never see my friends again, knowing I would just hurt them.

Knowing I would kill them.

That's why I distance myself. I have too. Even if I control the curse...I'm still a monster. I still crave blood.

That's why I hunted monsters. They satisfied the bloodlust. This way I wouldn't hurt innocents.

"What's it to you?" I growled.

"I know you do not like me," She sighed, "But I do know what we gods did was wrong. I'm sorry for that."

I tried to hide my confusion. She was...apologizing?

"I will keep your secret Per- Bane," Hera smiled sadly, "I swear it on the River Styx."

Thunder rumbled overhead sealing the promise. I stood in shock as my least favorite goddess did just the smallest act of kindness.

I did something I never thought I would ever do.

I hugged her, crying into her shoulder. For the first time in forever I let all my pain and misery out. All of the years I had spent holding it in just came pouring out.

Hera rubbed my back reassuringly. Eventually I fell asleep, dreaming of nothing.
---------------------------------
I woke up in Hera's cabin in wolf form. How did I get here?

The memories of yesterday started rolling in. I noticed something in the mirror, a white peacock on the side of my back.

I walked out the cabin but not before stepping in a puddle of drool on the way out.

Annabeth was right. I drool in my sleep.
