Victoria barely left the young girl's side unless it was to get her a cold washcloth or to bring some blood in a cup, even though she was awake and healed within hours of being transformed. Victoria and Syalis knew that she was too delirious to remember her own name. She would sit on the guest bed wrapped in a blanket- sweating, shivering, and staring at nothing.
After a few days of this, Victoria brought her a cup of blood. The girl's eyes suddenly focused for the first time on the cup before her green eyes began glowing. The blood vessels in her eyes popped, leaving trails of blood dripping down her cheeks.
“Syalis… come here!” Victoria exclaimed quietly, knowing he could hear her. Not a second had gone by and he was kneeling on the bed behind the young girl. “Can you remember your name?” he asked in a low whisper, while rubbing her back.
“Serenity” she whispered. Even though she hadn’t spoken in days, her voice rang clear.
Victoria moved slowly, but sat on the bed in front of Serenity, whose eyes hadn’t left the cup of blood. “Try to drink it slowly.” she said, wiping a bloody tear off of Serenity’s face.
Serenity nodded, slowly putting the cup to her lips. Once the blood was gone, she curled up in Syalis’ lap and fell asleep. He pushed her dark hair out of her face and watched her sleep peacefully for the first time since coming here.
"We can't lose her like we lost Anastasia." Victoria whispered wiping the blood off of Serenity's face and neck with a cloth.
"It won't." Syalis' eyes darkened, "I won't let it."
Victoria crawled up the bed resting her head on the pillow opposite Syalis, putting a hand on Serenity's shoulder and she smiled before drifting off to sleep as well.
Syalis sat looking at the two girls lovingly, "I won't let the hunters get you like they did my first daughter… I promise." he murmured, petting her brown hair with his long, pale fingers.
Syalis stayed awake all night watching the girls and listening to the sounds of the night. Right before first light, he heard the sound of foot falls running toward his house. Moving slowly, he picked Serenity up off his lap and put her closer to Victoria before jumping out the bedroom window.
A man almost identical to Syalis stood in the immaculate yard facing the house his long blond and silver streaked hair hung in a single braid down his back. The almost identical men hugged before taking a seat on the wrap around porch of the house.
“Is everything okay I could smell blood from almost a mile out" the long haired man asked with concern layering his deep voice.
"Yes…well Sean..'' Syalis seemed to stutter over his thoughts. "You remember how we took in Anastasia and then we lost her…"
Sean's face fell, "Yeah… what about her? Is Victoria getting bad again?"
Syalis chuckled at the thought of his wife's last depressed massacre. She had covered the entire house in blood, trying to drink away her sadness. "No it's not Vic this time… this is my doing." he looked at his brother in the eyes before continuing, "I was out on a night run the other night, when I smelled blood. Upon further investigation it was a teen girl being attacked by a mountain lion."
Sean opened his mouth to interrupt, but was stopped by Syalis, "I know...why would I care about some random dying human."
Sean widened his eyes agreeably, "They literally die every minute."
"Well I transformed her… but the reason you will have to see to understand." Syalis said while leading Sean through the dark house.
Syalis peeked into the door of the guest room to make sure the girls were still sleeping. Looking in, he found Victoria sitting up watching Serenity toss in her sleep. "What the hell Syalis!" Sean exclaimed in a whisper looking over his brother's shoulder. Victoria slid off the bed as she noticed her husband and his twin looking in the door.
She ushered the boys to the kitchen to be safe that they wouldn't wake Serenity while Sean continued to berate her husband. "She could be Stacy's twin what were you thinking… you can NOT replace her with someone else." Sean ranted trying to put it all together.
Victoria's eyes began to glow brightly as she became enraged, "what the Hell did you say…" the boys both stepped back in shock at Victoria's outburst. "We tried to save her normally but I wasn't strong after healing YOUR son, we didn't really have any other choice…" she burst into tears, "I couldn't watch her die she just looked so much like her…"
Syalis pulled Victoria's small crying frame into his embrace, wiping the bloody tears from her face he turned back to his brother. "We aren't trying to replace Anastasia, but when Serenity was dying it was like coming home to Stacy's body all over again." Syalis sighed, "Honestly by the time I traded blood with her it was a gamble if she would die anyway."
Sean took all this in silently before pulling them both into his arms, "I'm sorry I assumed the worst… I should have known you two were too damn noble for your own good." putting them at an arm's length he smiled, "If it ever gets to be too much, you can always send her to Sydney and my house. Liam needs a friend anyway."
Victoria seemed to brighten at the idea. "Syd and I could take the kids shopping when Serenity wakes up." she said as she turned to make coffee.
