The next morning went as expected there was a loud bell that chimed for wake up call then again calling all the students to breakfast. Faces and people blurred together through study hall which was ironically on the lawn, after that they all bored their way through SAT prep which focused on math the first day.
Things finally got interesting when Tiny lead all the first years out to a large obstacle course in the forest where Chucky was waiting on a rock climbing wall. As the two men called out names the students entered the course. As Serenity's name was called she started climbing over the first wall. She dropped over the wall, next was swinging ropes hanging over water she swung across easily and crawled under a net that forced you to lay on your stomach. The course continued on until finally Tiny called her name, she went over to him slightly out of breath.
"Your cousin said you make things blow up?", He asked raising an eyebrow.
"Ya I don't mean to but sometimes when I get mad things blown up and people get shoved back.", she explained.
"Cool can I see?", he asked it like a question but she knew he was gonna make her at least try.
"What do you not mind me blowing up?", she smirked evilly, a trait she had picked up from her dad and uncle.
Tiny handed her a pen, dropping it on the ground. She concentrated on it as hard as she could then suddenly it hovered for a minute before it burst into nothing.
"So your able to change an objects form.", he stated.
"What?", she exclaimed.
"You made that pen into air, you probably can change anything that is solid, liquid or gas.", he stated bored writing on a clipboard.
"How do you know?"
"My ability is reading other people's powers, now go wait with the rest of my class over by the rock wall.", he smiled, nodding to the first obstacle.
"Yes sir", she saluted jokingly. Serenity joined the small group of people under the wall. There was an olive skinned girl balancing a pencil on end in her palm, a boy that was maybe 4 feet tall and very thin leaned against the wall, presumably asleep, and another boy with short blond hair that looked like a child sat on the wall swinging his legs. Serenity sat down and started looking at the math notes while they waited.
Thirty minutes passed and there are still two people on the track, Tiny called them to him and sent them to where the rest of Tiny's students were waiting. As the pair reach their group, Serenity put her book away and stood up.
"Everyone listen up!", Tiny's shrill voice made all conversation stop instantly. "Each group follow your coach and we will give you further instructions.", with that Tiny walked over to the climbing wall. Liam's group had Chucky for an instructor, on the opposite side of the field with the other elemental students.
As he got to them Tiny smiled, "Okay! This is gonna be fun. Let's pair y'all up, Matt and Conner your both body types so I'm pairing you up. Corrie and Ren your together and Jack and Simon that leaves you together." Tiny turned and started giving instructions to Matt a broad caramel skinned boy who was nearly as tall as Tiny, and Conner a pale stick thin boy who was maybe 5' if he stood his tallest.
"So what can you do?", a shy voice asked from behind Serenity. Turning she found the Hispanic girl staring at her with a timid grin.
"Well..."she shrugged, "Tiny said it was something along the lines of making things take on different densities, but I don't know what he means by that." Serenity started laughing, "mostly I just make random stuff bow up."
Corrie started laughing, "And I thought I had it bad when I was accidentally throwing things across the room.", by the time they finished laughing Tiny had already finished talking to the other two boys.
Tiny handed Serenity and Corrie a large bag of marbles. "Ren I want you to try to melt the marble instead of blowing it up and Corrie I want you to try levitating them."
"What!", they exclaimed in unison.
"How am I supposed to do that?", Serenity asked.
"Instead of just mindlessly focusing on things, imagine it literally melting", with that he turned to Matt and Conner who were on the other side of the field, practice wrestling.
Serenity sat down on the grass and pulled a marble out of the cloth bag. Setting it on the ground she tried to imagine the glass growing warm and melting, but it only quivered a bit before it exploded throwing bits of dirt and grass everywhere.
At that exact moment a marble whizzed past her face and slicing through her hair.
"Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry I lost focus.", Corrie apologize, running past to retrieve the marble she had lost control of.
The class continued various mishaps continued erupted around the meadow until the bell rang.
Suddenly Serenity's phone started vibrating in the bottom of her bag, her mom's smiling face showed up on the phone
"Hey mom", she answered.
"Hey honey, are you OK you sound tired?"
"Ya I'm okay we just had ability training just now and I'm exhausted.", Serenity replied as she brushed past people as she headed down the stone steps to her room.
"Okay honey I just wanted to check on you and to tell you to not over do it, mental powers are exhausting."
"Hey mom I'm gonna go take a nap I'll call you later."
"Okay. Love you."
"Love you too mom"
Serenity hung up right as she got to my dorm collapsing in bed she fell asleep instantly.
She woke up to a dark room, glancing at her clock Serenity realized she had been sleeping for almost two hours. It was just a little past eight so everyone would be done hunting and probably out partying. The thought of the loud noises made her already foggy head start to hurt. She stumbled to the bathroom and changed into some leggings and a tank top, before heading out the door barefoot, hoping food would set her head right.
She picked a bar secluded on the edge of town, crouching in a large pine tree she waited for an easy target.
She hadn't been waiting long when a man in his mid thirties stumbled and fell out the bar's side door, picking himself off the ground he drunkenly swatted his sandy colored hair out of his face. Holding onto the wall he made his way toward the back of the bar.
Time seemed to crawl as Serenity's throat burned with need, she leapt from the tree onto the roof, crouching as she walked across the top of the bar to find the man passed out at a picnic bench beside the dumpsters. Large amounts of beer bottles and cigarette butts littered the ground making it obvious this was where the employees took their brakes. She hopped silently down behind him before instinct too over, sinking her teeth into the back of the man's shoulder and she drank her fill, the man was so drunk he didn't even stir.
After she got rid of his body, her head felt like normal again so she started roaming the town sightseeing the way only vampires can. By rooftop, after roaming for about an hour she found the tallest building. Fully transformed and hiding in the shadows she scaled the side of it until Serenity reached its highest point. She perched like a gargoyle while she looked over the town, from this height all the people in the streets looked like ants. Focusing on her eyesight she could pick out what the different people looked like.
Suddenly she spotted the hoodie she had bought for Liam, Serenity ran down the building, catching up to Liam easily as he ducked and dogged through alleys to avoid leaving a snow trail.
"Hey stranger. Missed you at dinner.", Liam said slinging an arm around Serenity as she stepped out of the shadows.
They wandered around town finding the best hunting spots until almost curfew.
They got back across the rope bridge just before 12, Headmistress Flowers greeted them with a disapproving glare with her stern eyes.
"Try not to cut it so close next time, once the doors the dining hall are locked there is no way to get into the school until morning."
"Yes ma'am", they replied heading through the dining hall doors to the balcony.
"That's everyone", said Mrs. J. a poodle looking woman who they had seen many times running back and forth through the school with her arms over flowing with paperwork.
"Alright, to all the new kids, at 1AM we release our guard dogs, they are trained to drag intruders back to their den until morning. They don't know the difference between students and intruders, they won't hurt you unless you hurt them", Headmistress Flowers stated sternly.
After she finished her speech, she left with Mrs. J left discussing paperwork issues. Chatter continued as Liam and Serenity headed to the balcony above the dorms.
Snow flowed into the building as Liam entered the dining hall gaining glares from most of the other students. Ignoring them he sat down next to Serenity, she looked much better this morning laughing and waving her arms as she talked to Jade. She had her long hair pinned out of her face and she seemed more awake then she had in months.
Jade and her talked excitedly about Jade's brother's club, while Liam ate quickly so he could take his roommate breakfast. His roommate Alex was afraid he will make someone mad if he went inside with his rain ability. Saying goodbye to Jade and Ren. Liam grabbed a plate of eggs and bacon and went to the study courtyard.
The courtyard was on the edge of the schools border which had a high wall that was electrified to keep even the strongest vampires out. The courtyard lawn spread 100 yards between the bell tower and the wall picnic tables for studying lined the edges making a border between the study courtyard and the training grounds which were located further down the valley.
Alex was sitting in the far back corner studying his math homework from the day before. He pushed his laminated book aside as Liam handed him the plate of food. He ate quickly as to keep his food from getting too wet to eat, as bad Liam had it Alex's rain cloud was unreal, floating above him like a miniature storm.
"Are you going to drink that?", Liam asked pointing at his orange juice.
He just shook his head and continued eating. Liam picked up the cup the liquid freezing at his touch, ever since he turned one all his drinks turn into popsicles. He tapped the cup upside down in his hand until the orange block fell out and he began chewing on the cetris block of ice. By the time Alex finished eating most of their class had joined them on the grass. The previous day everyone had just kept to themselves, not knowing anyone. But today having had all day to meet everyone, people began grouping themselves together with people they had either met in class or out hunting, as Serenity walked out the door she was grabbed by Corrie, the girl tried to drag her away but Serenity made a straight line for her friends dragging the Hispanic girl with her.
"Hey Liam, who's your waterlogged friend?", Serenity asked sitting across from Alex and Liam.
"Ren this is my roomie Alex. Alex this is my obnoxus cousin.", Liam smirked as Serenity pretended to be offended.
"Corrie this is my cousin Liam, Liam this is Corry. She is in the same ability training group I'm in.", Serenity stated, opening her SAT book.
"Anyone know what today's lesson will be about?", Alex asked, his voice barely a whisper.
"Ya. Monday is math, Tuesday is English, Wednesday is science, Thursday is reading, and Friday is the day you work on homework you didn't understand through the week.", Jade replied joining them, "I did all of that last year, but they are making me retake my ability class again. That's why I'm still a first year."
"They should have a night course for people who have strictly nocturnal abilities.", Serenity stated hotly.
"I asked them about that, but they told me that we had to learn to use our ability during the day in case we were attacked.", Jade replied with a disgusted look on her face. Jade was well known for not being able to keep her emotions to herself. She was always the first to speak up if she didn't like something, which was anything that had to do with day time.
Study period was almost over when a snow flurry blew itself up Liam's nose causing him to sneeze blowing a plume of snow a yard in all directions, covering not only them but the people around them.
Matt's muscular form covered in snow angrily approached them. "What the hell man! You ruined my textbook."
Liam was about to tell the guy off, but Serenity beat him to it. "Matt if you have a problem with my family then you have a problem with me. And do you really want to start this with me.", she said standing up to make her point.
"Maybe I don't care. I saw you in training yesterday, you can't control your powers at all.", Matt taunted getting in Serenity's face.
Her face was beginning to transform as her anger got the best of her. Liam jumped away from the area dragging Alex with him as Jade copied his actions dragging Corrie to safety.
"What is going on?", Alex asked shaking some for the rain out of his hair like a dog.
Jade smiled, "Ren is not exactly in control when she gets mad. Things start blowing up and then she passes out from over exerting herself. Last time she got like this it took almost a whole day for her to wake up."
Alex and Corrie stood with shocked faces.
Meanwhile Matt and Ren were still yelling at each other. Liam peeked over his shoulder just in time to see Matt's book explode.
"The hell was that?", Matt snarled looking at the broken up ground where his book had been.
Serenity shoved her own book into his hands before storming off to the library room, where the school had the SAT prep class, leaving her friends to follow in her wake leaving Matt dumb founded on the lawn, with most of the other kids snickering.
Serenity could hardly pay attention in class as the Headmistress Flowers droned on about run- on sentences. Looking out the window she could see the teachers building at the bottom of the ravine, it held the teachers dorms and the hospital. The window to the hospital had tinted glass in the shape of a staff surrounded by two snakes.
Getting to the lunch hall she found Jade and Corry waiting for her, "have you ever looked at the window in the hospital." She asked sitting down.
Jade instantly perked up, "It's Asclepius' staff he is the Greek god of medicine or health, but even the humans use his staff as their logos; but it has long since lost it's true meaning in their culture."
"That's kinda sad if you think about it", Corry wrinkled her forehead in thought," being a vampire had it's obvious ups and downs such as: heightened senses and odd powers. Coupled by the need to hide and hunt humans, most don't realize that my vampire dad was turned near the victorian era, but his vampire father was from a time when people still believed in what humans now call Greek mythology. I guess what I'm trying to say is the erra is only 2 or 3 generations away when it's been hundreds of years to the humans."
"Wow that's crazy is your grandpa still around?", Serenity asked suddenly wanting to ask her dad a million questions like when she was a first waking up from being sick.
Corry laughed at her sudden outburst, "Ya but he has been a nomad for as long as my dad can remember. Even still my whole family are nomads it serves us well traveling constantly. School is the longest I will have stayed anywhere."
"Then you have families like mine that have lived in the same place for generations never going into the human world except to hunt.", Jade added. After they finished eating they separated to their own agendas mostly napping in their or relaxing in the forest.
Laying on her bed Serenity picked up Her phone "ring, ring, ring Hey honey how's school?", her dad's deep voice rang through the phone.
"Hey Dad I have some odd things that I want to ask you."
"Okay"
School is fine, but there was a window with Asclepius' staff and I just thought we haven't really talked about religion or nomad people. I was just curious what you could tell me."
"Oh..." her dad paused thinking. "Well when I was a kid I was raised Catholic but when Sean and I were changed our vampire father was a demonic caregiver and a nomad which meant Sean and I traveled everywhere learning about the creatures the humans believe to be myths such as, hell hounds or pixies"
"But that doesn't really answer my question. What religion are you now?", I asked.
"Well I believe there is a higher power but it has been many years since gods have walked the earth.", He stated somberly.
"So what made you stop being a nomad."
"Your mom, when I met her, her family hadn't moved in hundreds of years, but I couldn't let go completely of my nomad ways so we compromised, 10 years in one spot then move." He gave a slight laugh, "Best of both. Oh I almost forgot I put some money on your card go get a tablet so your mom can FaceTime you she is driving me crazy."
Suddenly the bell chimed signaling lunch had ended. "Thanks Dad I have to get to ability training, love you."
"Love you too Ren I'll see you for fall break."
After hanging up she made her way to the fields for training. Once class had started Tiny came over to Corry and Serenity. "So not much progress yesterday so I want you to try something new, in theory you should both be able to feel out objects with your mind", throwing a hand full of marbles on the grass he said, "I want you to feel them out using your ability just relax abilities come from your core not your mind.", With that he went back to strength training with the four boys.
Looking down at all the marbles in the grass Serenity let out a little sigh, she crouched down focusing on the marble closest to her, she closed her eyes imagining water and the molecules becoming less rigid letting her mold them like clay. Opening her eyes she looked at the marble again: instead of blowing up, the marble had become the shape of a miniature football. Corrie's eyes widened with amazement, picking up the odd shaped marble Serenity closed her eyes and focused on the glass in her hand. Slowly she could feel the marble melting through her fingers before it suddenly exploded in her hand. The force of the marble turning to air in her hand causing bits of skin and blood shooting in all directions.
Corrie being the closest one to her got covered with dark red drops, as Tiny ran over to check on them. Serenity looked down at her hand the bones showed in some places while blood flowed over the ripped muscles. The pain is almost non-existent due to the nerves being severed so quickly,.
"What happened?", Tiny asked taking a closer look at her left hand, the had blood almost stopped flowing already due to her vampire healing. Reaching into his side satchel he pulled out a medical glove, "Put this on so while your fingers grow back so they don't try to heal into each other.", He said handing Serenity the glove.
The pain was already back as the muscles strained to grow, pulling the glove over her mutilated hand turned out to be hell the plastic from the glove sticking to my skinless muscles sending electric pain over my whole body. Biting her lip serenity managed to get the glove on without screaming.
"Should only take an hour or two to heal and it should be back to normal.", Tiny said, "What were your thinking holding it in your hand anyway?"
"Well I took your advice but after a few min all I could do was make it look like a football so I picked it up and it was working, but then I lost focus and the liquid glass blew up my whole hand", she snapped still gritting her teeth from pain.
Tiny looked from Corrie to Serenity and back again both girls covered in blood, "You are both dismissed so you can get cleaned up and hunt. Don't expect this the next time you blow up one of your limbs.", He said before walking away.
