Chapter 5

The next six months went by in a whirlwind of Serenity and Liam breaking things and their strength glitching. Syalis and Sean had banned them from going anywhere alone leaving them bored in the houses either watching TV or playing games. Liam and Serenity were laid out on the couch dozing off to an 80s musical they had found in the attic. While the adults watched sports on the back porch of Serenity's home.

Syalis and Sean walked through the backdoor wearing identical evil smiles, we are going to start training tonight.", Sean said leaning his lanky arm around his brother's shoulder.

"We figured you were getting sick of being stuck in the house.", Syalis grinned, "And we can't let the two of you go to school defenceless."

"Like fighting.", Liam grinned like a mad man at his father.

"Yep…. But don't be too happy.", Syalis stated.
"It's gonna be more along the lines of us using you kids as punching bags until you learn to dodge.", Sean finished with a gleam in his green eyes. "Go get dressed in some workout gear we are leaving in an hour.

After putting on t-shirts and shorts, they ran a few miles away to a dense part of the forest. Their dads stopped perching on limbs 200 feet in the tops of the trees.  Sean squatted on the branch holding a finger in the air, "Lesson one getting hit doesn't hurt like when you were human." Without warning both men launched themselves at their children. Sean kicking Liam in the stomach and Syalis punching Serenity in the chest, knocking them both out of the trees.

Thunderous sounds erupted as the two hit the ground, but after a moment both stood up visibly unharmed. "Hey, you could have given us some warning!", Liam growled, his eyes turning black in anger.

Sean was suddenly behind him, "Two… your enemies won't give you time to prepare.", he grabbed the back of his son's shirt throwing him back up into the trees. Liam had been ready for Sean's attack and grabbed a branch swinging to safety. But, Sean was faster catching him by the throat and pinning him to the tree.

Meanwhile, Serenity was on the ground being chased by Syalis as he threw punch after punch at his daughter as she bolted between the trees unsuccessfully dodging. He braced a foot against one of the larger trees before launching himself at her legs, pinning her to the ground.

"Three..", both men spoke at once, "Being stabbed still hurts like hell.", they said before stabbing a transformed hand into the soft skin between the kids collarbone and their shoulder.

Liam and Serenity screamed as the extended fingernails ripped into their shoulders. Sean grabbed Liam by his good arm before jumping to the ground. Liam collapsed next to his cousin before glaring they both glared up at their parents.

"Hey now don't be mad.", Sean bent down to look them in the eyes, "Honestly we went easy on you, enemies  won't care your children."

"And the vampires you will go up against will already have their abilities so you will be fighting an unknown force as well.", Syalis said inspecting his daughter's shoulder that had already healed completely. "Skin heals fast but bones take hours to heal, but fire takes years to heal from. If your ever caught on fire you have about a second to put yourself out or…", he drew his thumb across his neck.

Serenity and Liam nodded somberly, before they continued to train for the remainder of the day, Sean and Syalis only throwing kicks and punches no longer using their nails.

5 Months Later

Serenity was laying in her bed reading, looking over at the clock, it was just past midnight, as the rain pounded extra hard on her window. She listened to the rain letting her thoughts wander. She began to think about how close Liam and her had gotten over the past year, they had become attached at the hip. No matter where they went they were always together.
