Chapter One

Looking to my left and right, I found a sea of bodies intermingling along the walkway of the second floor of the mall. Between the store fronts and the railing, people were crammed together walking briskly toward where they wanted to go. It seemed everyone was here today just because the Queen of the Werewolves was coming to do some PR something or the other.

I hadn't found out till I was already here at the mall and going about my shopping day for this month. I just wanted a nice day of window shopping and picking up a few things for myself. Not that I had anyone that I could buy for, but still. This was the day I had just wanted to get out of the house, and be me.

I wasn't wealthy by any means either. Every cent I had in my pocket or in my bank account, I had to work hard for. All my money was from every ounce of sweat from my brow. Every bruise on my body was another indication of that.

Another sigh came out as I decided to weave my way through the only thickening crowd. Guessing my time at the mall will be cut short this time and will have to find another day to come out for relaxing. I hadn't even had my pedicure yet to get some of the thick skin off my heel and side of the big toes.

Oh well...

Getting through the crowd took time and patience. So many were excited and anxious to see the Queen of the Wolves with her husband and daughter, the heiress to the throne though she was only three years old right now. I couldn't help but be with everyone thinking she was the cutest little girl in all the world. All the children in the world were cute, but she took the cake.

I took the stairs down to the main floor as many preferred the escalator to move between the levels. Though today it was evenly matched with how many people were in the mall. Not enough room for everyone on the escalators. The whole city must be here today along with the surrounding towns in order to see the royals coming today.

Rolling my eyes at the excited squeal that could only have meant that the royal family had shown up. People started to rush in one direction. I took the opportunity to go in the opposite direction away from the commotion. I wasn't about to be trampled in the mob just to catch a glimpse of the royals.

I just didn't get why people fawned over others like they did. They were just a family like every one else when you boil it down. They loved each other immensely and the only thing that sets them apparent is that they are the leaders of their kind. Still, so many want to know every thing they do as if it were life for them.

Brushing past someone, I suppressed the tingling feeling I felt along the tips of my fingers. It wasn't the first time I felt this. Magic was not a foreign thing to me as my family had welded it for more generations than I knew. Magic ran deep through the blood lines of both my parents, but we didn't find out about my dad's side till six years ago during the civil war of the werewolves.

My father didn't know much of his family history because his mother died when he was young after bringing here to the United States for a better life. He never knew his father either as his father was killed in a car accident when he was just born. Unfortunately it was my grandfather's fault as he was driving drunk when he found out my grandmother had gone into labor.

When I turned three, he left my mom to take care of my brother and I all on her own. It's where I get working hard to survive from. Hard work was all I knew since I was very young. We may have magic, but magic didn't pay the bills.

A step away from the one that sent tingles down my fingers and into my bones, I felt the shift in the crowd but didn't pay it any mind. I was going away from where everyone was desperately heading. No one was going to keep me from my quiet and peaceful time that I needed. I really didn't like being around so many.
