Chapter Twelve
A groan came out as the car in front of me only inched a few inches up. What the hell was up with this traffic? At this rate, it would take another half an hour before I was to work. I may have been going over to the store early, but with how the traffic was at the moment, I was actually going to be late.
At another stand still, I dialed my work number and loved the fact that I had a bluetooth enabled car for handsfree talking. I hated seeing people in their cars with their cellphones pressed against their ears. People like those tend to be the leading cause of accidents as they are too distracted to pay attention to actual driving. I've witnessed several run solid red lights and crash into cars that had the right of way.
It didn't take long to tell my work that I was stuck on the main road that led to the store. Even though it wasn't my fault, my general manager still was telling me how unacceptable it was that I was going to be late. This was a rare time I was late. She was late all the time, yet I was setting a bad example to the staff for being late.
Hanging up the phone, I cursed under my breath. Why was I still working somewhere that treated me like everything was my fault even though I was the one fixing all the mistakes that my boss does. And she does the same ones all the time. I've shown her time and time again the correct way to do things, but she still does the same mistakes as because she doesn't learn from her mistakes at all.
Finally I made it to the stop bar as the light changed to red again. This was the seventh time this light has turned red since I've been trying to get through it. The traffic was just that bad today, which was very unusual. A rare occurrence in all the years I've worked at this particular store.
My phone started to ring from its holder on my dash, and I frowned. Deen. Why was she calling me? That wasn't usually how she contacted me. She'd just show up somewhere randomly if she needed something from me. This departure had my worry spike high.
"Hello? Deen?"
"RUN THE RED LIGHT NOW!!!"
I stared at the phone in shock. The shock was kicked out of me when I was jerked forward as the car behind me rammed into the back of my car. My head momentarily hit the stirring wheel dazing me. I could hear Deen curse out loud on the other end of the phone as another hit happened. Horns started blaring all around me.
My car shifted and jerked farther forward with the next ram into the back of my car. I lifted my head from the stirring wheel as it had hit again. My vision blurred just as my eyes grew wide seeing a hazed image of a truck was barring down at full speed toward my car.
I shifted my foot off the brake and before I could depress the accelerator, the truck hit my car head on. The force was so great that the passenger side of my car caved in and my body was slammed hard against my driver's side door. I had no time to think or reason why this was happening. All I could do was feel the fear of never seeing Ian again. My heart screamed out to be with him at his place again, safe and sound.
The whole world filled with electricity as my sight was blinded with white. I let my physical form drift on this existence of white and electricity. It enveloped me with its speed and purity as if it were an old friend that had missed me. Something about this was so familiar and comforting, I just couldn't place my finger on why it was so familiar.
~~Deen's Point of View~~
Shit, shit, shit.
I pushed my bike as fast as it would go weaving in and out of this thick traffic. A traffic that had been staged to be this thick. They had planned this out to the last detail, whoever they were that were after Reika. They won't have her, not if I could help it.
I didn't even have to glance to either side of me to know that my husband and our whole pack were right on my heels to get to her car. Hearing the crash over the phone, I knew for certain that their plan had been set into motion. I had taken a gamble in actually calling her to try and warn her, but it had been too late. Now we just needed to get to her and away from those that had set all this up.
Breaking through the crowd of cars and around the crowd of drivers that had emerged with shock at the sight of the accident that just took place. An accident that wasn't an accident at all, but a planned assault on Rieka to get to her.
Putting on the breaks heavily as I shifted the bike to skid to a stop, I was so quick off my bike and over to the driver's side of Reika's now mangled car. What I saw jolted me back. There was no way they had taken her out of it so quickly as the car just stopped moving a moment ago. There was blood on the stirring wheel and on the driver's side door.
Shane stopped next to me and frowned. "They have her already?"
I shook my head. "There was no way. Something else is at work here." Looking around, people were on their phones about this accident. We didn't have much time here.
Reaching into her car, I pulled out her purse and retrieved her cell phone. Wherever she was, she'd want these kept safe. Who knows how many people would try to steal these even if there was an accident and police all around.
"We should get out of here before it gets crazy." Shane nodded to his wife and moved over to his bike.
Deen looked to the truck and saw the clouded eyes of someone possessed. Whatever was going on, it was on a more mystical level than they knew how to fight. This was a realm that Reika herself has been raised in and knew how to fight. We just needed to find out where they took her and try to find someone that would help us get her back. Ian had that one witches council lady he could contact, but was there anyone else?
Shane looked down at his phone after he mounted his bike and frowned. Looking at me, I knew the look and nodded back to him. He made a gesture to the others and we all mounted quickly. Spinning his bike around, he shot in the direction that we had come.
We passed the police as they made their way to the accident. They couldn't worry about us that were heading in the opposite direction than they were traveling. Shane obviously saw something that will help us find Reika. After all, he had the tracker app open on his phone and logged in. Maybe she still had the tracker on her when she was taken.
~~Unknown Point of View~~
I roared as I tossed the crystal across the room. It smashed so beautifully against the stone of the wall around my fireplace. How could my ghouls have failed in killing her? She was the only one that could claim what was mine by birthright!! She was only half blooded as it was. My older brother had been foolish for falling for that pathetic witch so long ago.
Where did she go off too?
Pacing over the persian rug of reds and blacks, I thought about it. The little child was kept blind by her own Grandmother because of a pack that we shared. I get the thrown, and her Grandmother shall remain Grand Witch for as long as she can maintain control over that child. Should she lose control over that child, she and I would both lose.
That little child couldn't get away from my ghouls so quickly without aid from someone else. She didn't even know that her father wasn't human or witch himself, her Grandmother sought to that, so she has no idea the full potential deep within her.
She did bound with a wolf and became his mate. Should she research that farther, she'll realize that no other witch had ever done that. Witches rarely every intermingle with wolves as their magics are polar opposites and repel each other magically. There would never be a child or a mating had this little brat been fully witch.
But the wolves didn't know that. They've kept themselves segregated from the whole mystical community for so long that they have missed much about their own natures. How could they understand the subtleties that came with the non-human side of the universe?
Grabbing the glass of wine off the table, some of it splashed onto the floor, but I didn't care. I needed to come up with a new plan to off that silly little love child of my brother's. Something that would be infallible this time.
