Chapter 26: From One To Another
"So, what did you call me for...?"
"We're going shopping."
Sawyer stared at Trinity blankly with absolute bewilderment as the petite girl sharply spun around and began walking down the sidewalk of the busy city streets. "W-Wait, what are we shopping for?" He asked as he rushed forward to catch up. "And why do you need me to go shopping with you...?"
"I need your help with buying a few things," Trinity replied, her eyes glued to the space in front of her.
"Groceries or..."
"A gift." Trinity's answer caused Sawyer to flick his eyes towards her in curiosity. She continued, "I need help deciding what would be a good gift and you seem like you'd know what to pick."
Sawyer wasn't sure whether that was a compliment or not, but he accepted it nonetheless. "Alright then, who's this for?"
"Renelle. She said it was going to be her birthday today when we rescued her, so I decided to help her get comfortable with her surroundings by buying her a gift."
Sawyer snapped his fingers, "Oh, that's right! That's a really good idea, Trinity. I didn't even think of that."
Trinity only nodded her head in return. "So, what would you buy a girl of her age...?" She asked slowly with a clueless and uncertain tone in her voice.
Sawyer was about to open his mouth to question her knowledge of gifts before answering his thoughts himself. 'She probably doesn't know how to give a gift to a kid because she never got that luxury as a kid herself...' He slightly shook his head and thought for a moment. "Well, for starters, kids love toys, so that's probably the easiest thing to get her without worrying if she'd like it or not."
"Okay..."
"Kids also love candy, so let's get her some of that too. Let's get her a lot so she can share with her sister."
"Okay..."
"Does that all sound good...?"
"Yes..."
Sawyer laughed awkwardly from Trinity's lack of response, though he couldn't blame her. This was all new to her, so she doesn't have much input to give back. "Well then, let's start with the toy. We can just go to some toy shop in the city." He pulled out his phone from his pocket and looked up the locations of any nearby stores. "Oh, lucky us. There's one right on the corner of this block." He slid his phone back into his jacket and flicked his head in the direction they were going to motion Trinity to follow.
They walked side by side in silence, not having a conversation to speak about. After a few minutes, however, Trinity lightly piped up, "How's your arm, by the way...?"
"Hm? Oh, it's nothing bad, don't worry about it," Sawyer smiled. "I got it patched up as soon as we got back to Valcria last night and it's almost all gone already. I guess I underestimated the power of a Saber Card, since I thought it was going to be way worse."
Trinity nodded, "That's good to hear. But, don't let this be an excuse to throw yourself out in danger more like an idiot. Just because you have enhanced healing, doesn't mean you're invincible."
Sawyer raised his hands up in defense, "I won't! It's not that I even like fighting that much anyway! Trust me, I would much rather take a 10-hour nap than run in front of a storm of bullets."
"Good. That response shows me that you have common sense, unlike Faron and Kai."
Sawyer smiled, "Yeah, I'm not nearly as aggressive as them, that's for sure..."
