"Emily!" Rilee said, happily skipping into her best friend's apartment. "We're going on a trip."
"Where?"
"That's a surprise."
"When?"
"Today."
"Why?"
"Valid questions, love them, but, that's also a surprise."
"Does it involve a plane or something? Rilee, I don't have the funds-"
"I'm paying, pack your bags."
"How long will we be there? That's a valid question, I need to know how many bras I need to pack," Emily says, pointing her finger at Rilee. she didn't want to take the chance it was another "surprise" answer.
"About a month," she answers. Emily feels her mouth drop. "But I need to be able to call Cam... are we going out of country?"
"Oh," Rilee says, doing everything in her power to cover up that they weren't going to Australia to see her boyfriend. "Yeah, we are, I didn't even think about that, Em..."
Emily's eyes threatened to spill, but she took a deep breath and recovered. "I'll just tell him that we won't be able to talk this month as much as we normally do. It's fine, he's a big boy, he can take it."
Rilee felt bad lying to her friend, twisting their relationship so they could see each other. she couldn't risk him getting upset? that could ruin them, and they'd be going on a 15 hour flight for no reason at all.
"Emily, I'm a terrible person," Rilee says suddenly, making her friend look at her. "Don't tell Cam anything."
"What?"
"Trust me on this, okay?"
"Why can't I tell him?"
"Just, please, trust me."
Rilee could tell Emily was deep in thought for a moment, before she switched off her phone and slid it into her back pocket. "Alright," she mumbles. "I won't. But the second we get wherever we're going, I'm gonna connect to Starbucks and tell him where I am and what I'm gonna be doing."
"Fair enough," Rilee laughs. "You can tell him some bullshit though, so he won't think you're ignoring him."
"Like what?"
"You broke your phone and you're getting a new one in a couple days," she says randomly. "Actually, I'll tell him that, he'll believe it more."
"How bad did I break my fucking phone, Rilee?"
"Oh it's fucked," she answers dramatically. Emily laughs along with her friend and starts packing.
