"Come here, kid." The gravely voice of Mr. Pines called you over to the cash register. Today was your first day of work at the Mystery Shack.

"Lemme show you how to be a good business person."

Mr. Pines had been able to tell that this was your first job ever, and yet he still hired you for some reason.

"Now the first thing you need to know about business is that people are dumb, and will pay lots of money for, I don't know, this panther shirt. Or even this almost identical puma shirt." He continued to explain the dirty scams and ways to cheat people in business. But you didn't argue, or say 'Mr. Pines, cheating is wrong' because this was the only way you could get money. Even if you aren't being payed much, it's still better than nothing.

And while he was talking, a familiar face walked out of the 'Employees Only' door.

Bill Fucking Cipher.

Fantastic.

"Oh, yeah. (Y/N), I probably forgot to say this, but Bill is gonna be working with you at the counter."

"Wait, but I thought Wendy was going to be-"

"Nope. Sorry kid, but Wendy is helping with the attractions this summer."

"What about Soos?"

"Soos is kinda like the co-boss of the Mystery Shack."

Shit.

"What about Dipper? Or Mabel? Or literally anyone else! Just not Bill!" You looked at him with pleading eyes, while Bill was just standing there, saying nothing. You turned to glare at him, but he quickly found interest in the panther shirt.

"Sorry kid, but you'll be working with Bill this summer."

***

The two of you have been standing in an uncomfortable silence behind the counter for about three hours. You still helped the customers, of course. But you never said a word to each other unless it was absolutely necessary. For example:

"Bill restock this."

"(Y/N) can you help this customer?"

But eventually, Bill had had enough.

"(Y/N)," Bill sighed. "I'm really sorry about what happened yesterday. I invaded your personal space, and that is not ok."

You looked at him, shocked that he had actually apologized. He seemed like an arrogant, nosy person who doesn't know how to apologize. Even though you were till kinda pissed, you had to get over this if you were gonna be working with him all summer.

"Bill, it's not your fault." You sighed.

"Yes it is!" He insisted. "I shouldn't have tried to dig up a story that didn't want to be told."

Wow. He seems so genuinely upset.

Now I kinda feel bad for yelling at him.

"Bill, it's-"

"No (Y/N), it's not ok. I learned a long time ago not to dig to far, and that almost got me-" He stopped himself. "It got me into lots of trouble."

"Bill."

"Yeah (Y/N)?" He looked at you, red creeping up his cheeks.

"Can I speak now?"

"Oh, uh...yeah."

You stared into his golden orbs, a very unnatural color for human eyes to have, but they were beautiful.

"Bill," You started. "It's not entirely your fault. You were just curious. Sure, you showed it in a weird, creepy way, but you meant no harm. So if anything, I should be sorry for getting so worked up." You smiled up at him.

He gave you a look of relief, and went back to work.

A while passed while you too stood in silence. But it wasn't uncomfortable this time. Eventually, you spoke up again.

"Bill?"

He looked at you with his gorgeous golden eyes.

Wait, what?

"Yes (Y/N)?"

"If you were wondering," You started. "I didn't cut myself." His eyes widened in shock.

"Where did the scars come from then? Did someone give them to you?" You saw a brief flash of rage in his eyes.

"I...I'd rather not say. I just felt like you needed to know, so you don't think I was some weird, depressed young adult." You chuckled.

He's kinda hot.

Wait.

wHAT THE FUCK

You then looked away from him as you felt the heat rush up to your cheeks.

You both went back to your work.

You didn't know, but Bill had silently vowed to find and hurt very badly whoever had hurt you in your past. He didn't exactly know why he cared so much, but he knew you were worth it.

Unfortunately, you two were oblivious to Mabel watching this scene play out. Thankfully, she couldn't hear what was being said. But that didn't stop her from making assumptions.

It's gonna be a long summer.
