. . .

he couldn't find it anywhere and he was panicking. moonbin would come out any second now, and the goddamn ring was nowhere to be seen. the door squeaked open and minhyuk froze. he was hunched over the table and the living room was a mess. he had rummaged under the sofa, behind the tv, etc. everything was out of place.

moonbin stood leaning against the door frame. he was wearing a smart, black tux, making him look very hot. crossing his arms, he locked eyes with minhyuk and asked, "looking for something?"

minhyuk sheepishly nodded. "y.. yeah"

. . .

"what would you need a ring for?" moonbin questioned while searching through the bedroom cabinets.

"oh? it's my friend's engagement ring. he's going to propose at the same restaurant we're going to and he asked me to get it ready." minhyuk lied. it was already bad enough he had to have moonbin search for his own ring.

moonbin went in pursuit of it into the kitchen, leaving minhyuk alone in their bedroom. he checked what the time was. at this point, they might miss their reservation, meaning they would miss their anniversary dinner— and it was all his fault. with gritted teeth he continued to forage under the bed. he was about to start searching the cupboard when he heard moonbin call.

"minhyuk! i think i found it!"

minhyuk dashed to the kitchen just in time to see moonbin close a small, velvety box. he immediately recognized it. in his split second panic, he grabbed it out of moonbin's hands and quickly pocketed it.

"must've been the cat," he said, looking at the basket where moonbin had found it. he ignored the confused expression on moonbin's face. "let's get going, we're gonna be late."

. . .

it was a full house. not surprising, considering it was valentines day. the waiter led them to a table outside on the balcony, over looking the city. it was beautiful. they sat down and the waiter lit the candles and poured them glasses of rich, well aged wine.

"on the house," he said.

after taking their order, the waiter tucked the menu under his arm and left.

"so," said minhyuk, cupping his face in his hands and seductively gazing at the love of his life. "how's this?"

"neat. really neat. i love the view."

minhyuk smiled. he was happy, now as long as he didn't mess up the surprise.

the waiter came with the food and whispered something to minhyuk. he excused himself and went inside with the waiter. moonbin was confused. what was minhyuk doing, leaving him alone on a date?

he came back about 10 minutes later and acted like nothing happened— at which point moonbin had finished his meal and was starting dessert. he waited until minhyuk finished, then asked what was up. minhyuk mumbled an excuse and moonbin didn't buy it for a second. but he trusted him.

the waiter came and cleared away the dishes. he glanced at minhyuk while doing so and minhyuk nodded. moonbin saw this  exchange and he was suspicious.

"you know today is a special day, right?" asked minhyuk, grinning.

moonbin nodded. "valentines day?"

"yes, but better"

"this date?"

"no, dumbass. it's our anniversary. it's been four whole years since i was stood up and you came to my rescue"

moonbin gave him a lopsided grin. "really, that long?"

"yeah. and i have something to ask you," he made a beckoning gesture and the waiter came in, wheeling a tray. on top of it was a cake with white flowers and a red cake topper that said, '4 years'. moonbin was pleasantly surprised. he'd expected something after observing minhyuk's unusual behavior that night, but not like this.

"you like it?" asked minhyuk hopefully.

"like? i love this! i'm the one who usually does events like this, thank you baby!"

"and now," minhyuk got down on one knee. "for the important question," he got the velvet covered box from his pocket and opened it. "moonbin, will you marry me?"

moonbin's heart was pounding. he felt as if it would jump right out of his chest. he was going to say—

"sir," the waiter tapped minhyuk on his shoulder. "the ring, sir. the ring"

minhyuk was clearly confused. he got up and looked in the box. it was ... empty! he blushed furiously and started frantically emptying out his pocket. had it fallen while showing it to the staff? or was it at home? or—

"park minhyuk."

minhyuk stopped worrying for a second and said, "yeah babe?"

moonbin was down on one knee. he took something out of pocket. it flashed in the candle light and minhyuk gasped. it was the same, synthetic, white sapphire set ring he was looking for.

"park minhyuk, will you marry me?"

minhyuk was speechless. it was so much to take in. it was supposed to be the other way around. he was the one who was supposed to be proposing. but binnie ... ?

"yes. YES yes i will, i will."

moonbin slid the ring on minhyuk's finger. they got lost in each other's eyes. there was no need for words, it—

clapping erupted from behind them. hoots of congratulations were in order. it seemed as if everyone dining there that night had come together to witness the special moment. they couple were a bit dazed from all the attention, but they thanked everyone and waved.

"kiss!" someone randomly shouted from the crowd. (coughs me)

"kiss!" someone else yelled.

it quickly turned into a warlike chant, and everyone joined in. even the waiter and the staff.

moonbin smirked at his boyfriend— correction, fiance, and put an arm around his waist. "shall we?"

and they did.
