It wasn't until the next morning when Kate finally emerged and looked at Julie with a smile. "Soooo?"
Julie looked up from her book. "So, what?"
"Come on Jules!" Kate sounded exasperated. "Did you like him?"
Julie thought for a moment and decided she didn't like either. Although Kate was asking about Jim, she was thinking about the reasons she didn't like the piano boy. The problem was she had to push away the look on his face when he talked about his mothers. Her younger brothers showed their mother zero respect, yet he clearly loved his late mother and the one who took her place.
"Not really but he wants to take me out."
"Goody! You'll get to know him better and change your mind. We'll both be married to doctors and..."
Julie groaned. "I am not marrying a doctor. I don't even want to. You and Artie are different. You have a lot in common. You come from similar backgrounds. Could you see Jim having a beer with my father?"
"Your father will never accept any man you choose."
Julie had never thought about it, but Kate might be right. She would need to find a man she loved enough to fight her father over. Jim Albert was not the man.
Julie had thought Jim had forgotten about her, because almost two weeks had passed since the party. His call on Thursday night was disappointing.
"Let's go see a movie. You can pick what you want to see."
Julie had been wanting to see Pretty Woman. The entire world had seen it except her. Kate had picked up the Herald, so Julie checked the movie listing in the newspaper.
"There's one starting at three-ten in West Newton." She really didn't want to send the wrong message by planning a Saturday night date. She wanted her movie paid for, and Jim could afford to.
"I'm working at Mass General. I can make it, but I'd have to meet you there. I could drive you home."
Julie had chosen the theater, because it was an easy bus ride, so she agreed. Kate was the only one excited about the date. Julie's friend wouldn't listen when she assured her there wouldn't be a second date. She felt bad about using Jim to see a movie, but it was Richard Gere, An Officer and a Gentleman Richard Gere.
She didn't spend time getting ready and wore jeans and a comfortable sweater. She put on some lip gloss but refused to paint her face for him.
Not wanting to be late, she took an early bus. She always kept a paperback in her pocketbook, so she didn't mind if she arrived early. After a walk from the bus to the theater, she found a wall inside the lobby to lean against. The scent of buttery popcorn filled the area as she was content to occupy herself with her second favorite pastime, people watching. She tried to guess what movie was letting out. First was a mob of children. The Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Later came a lot of girls smiling which led her to believe the previous showing of Pretty Woman was over.
