Ever since he arranged for Clare to go home, he felt like they were getting closer. They even texted over Christmas. He was excited to see her and happily offered to pick her up from the airport. When he dropped her off, he wanted to kiss her, but wished her Merry Christmas instead.
When he picked her up, she hugged him but quickly stepped back. He wanted to show her he cared about her more than that other guy. On New Year's Eve, he drove by her house. It was almost midnight and he wasn't sure he would stop which was just as well because there was another car in her driveway.

As Clare boarded the plane, it was two thoughts that kept her from turning around and staying. The first was she only had six more months, and the second was her friends. She had a text from Michael wishing her a good flight. He had to have woken just to send it to her.
He was waiting for her when she made her way toward baggage claim. She suddenly felt awkward. They had texted a lot while she was away. Enough her brothers kept scoffing, "Friend."
Nick sat her down. "Claire, I'm a guy and so I know these things. This guy does not want to be your friend. The only girls I was ever friends with were either married or unattractive and you are neither of those. You're my sister so it's just gross, but you look good enough to get any guy you want."
"Nicky, did you just say I'm hot?" She teased. "What would your girlfriend think if she heard you?"
Nick rolled his eyes. "No, my sister isn't hot! I'll break the nose of any guy who treats you that way."
It was a good thing Nick never met Marco.
"So what's the deal with you? Are you in love?" Clare used her annoying voice.
Nick blushed. "I don't know. Maybe."
"Does she know you're the cream of the crop?" Clare remembered Julie's concerns.
"I don't know. Maybe."
"She'd be a fool not to."
Clare appreciated Michael, and they weren't dating. She didn't ask Nick anymore questions. If she wasn't willing to share details of her sex life, she didn't want to know about his. She teased him about calling her hot, but she wasn't blind, her brother had it all going for him.
