How was she going to face Kevin? She had failed her brother. If he wasn't dying of Aids, he would die of a broken heart. It was hard to understand Danny's choice.

"How could he choose not to come with us?"

"Jules, we'll never understand. If Kevin had to choose between your family and Danny, he would choose Danny, because your family isn't close. He's only close with you and you would never make him choose. I could never choose between you and my family, but my family would never put me in the position. I'm sure Danny loves his family. He also knows Kevin can't care for him how he needs to be cared for."

"He kept making me promise I would take care of Kev. Tim, how am I going to?"

"We'll find a way together."

Kevin wasn't surprised when they didn't return with Danny. "Did you see him?"

Julie nodded and started crying. Tim walked to Kevin. "He gave her a letter to give to you."

Kevin looked at Julie. "Jules."

"Kev, he loves you, but he wouldn't come with us."

"He can't. He needs his family. They aren't like ours. Dad hopes I rot in hell."

"You don't know that for sure!"

"I do. I called them while you were out. They know the truth and don't care."

"No! They can't do that to you!" Julie was too frantic; Kevin was calm.

"Jules, I always knew I was making a choice which would sever my relationship with them. Dad is Dad and he will never change, not even for me."

Julie was furious. What about their mother? She would call her, because Kevin needed her. She didn't understand why Kevin wasn't angry. He was suddenly calmer than he had been since they arrived the night before. She watched as he took Danny's letter and retreated into his room.

Julie looked at Tim. "Why isn't he angry?"

"He's smart enough to know your father would never accept the truth."

"But my mother?"

"Jules, you know her better than me, but she was quiet and let your father talk for her. Does she have a voice?"

Julie knew the answer. Her mother never disagreed with her father. Julie wasn't like her. She had already disagreed over little things with Tim. She wanted to be her own person and Tim didn't mind.

Tim took her hand and squeezed it gently. "I want to talk to Kev alone."

"I'd like to clean this place up."

Tim gave Kevin some time before knocking on his door. Julie found a cloth and started to tackle the dust. Keeping busy was her way to deal with her emotions.
