-----------------------------
Steam wafted in the wee morning, weaving through the mist at the break of dawn. Streaks of sunlight streamed into the forest, filtered by the scattered tree branches above.
There at the clearing of the forest, under the generous shade of the wizened trees were several tents.
Below, the sentinels guarding the clearing could not help but perk up at the delicious smell that emanated from their Sect Master's particular abode.
They could see the cloud-like puffs of white grey smoke emerging from the tent and inhaled deeper. The fragrant and comforting smell of meat among others lifted their moods.
"Breakfast! Come and get it!" a sharp cry woke the eager sentinels, who were sadly quick to leave their posts before the next shift started, to grab the food whose smell had tormented them all morning.
There at the ebbing fireplace, whose last dying embers were turning to ash, a group of grown men could be seen waiting like hungry ghosts that had never been fed before, plates and hands outstretched.
The tent doors flapped open as womanly figures streamed out holding sky high towers of bamboo tray baskets, still smoking from the steamer.
The women expertly sent a bamboo tray flying to different groups of men, with five sharing a basket.
When the tray cover was lifted, the puffs of steaming cloud escaped to unveil five steaming hot, soft, fluffy char siew baos (steamed bbq pork buns). The flower-like baos had broken open in the centre, revealing the dark juicy barbecued pork that they had seen being marinated the night before.
The grown men ignored all pretences of civility and grabbed the buns without any care of how hot they were. Some, in smaller groups, had grabbed two, one in each hand, holding then protectively to their bodies.
With the treasure in their hands, some ignored their burning palms and grasped the bao carefully before greedily grabbing a bite. The rest who were still wary of getting a burnt tongue were envious at the obvious bliss their compatriots had made and also followed suit. Their sighs of joy hummed throughout the camp, exhaling out fragrant puffs of condensation as the heat from the food kept the men warm in the cold mornings of the mountains.
Blissful heaven on earth.
It would have truly been haven for these weary souls had their bliss not been interrupted by the angry roars from a demon.
"Rong Su Chen! Where is my breakfast??" the angry demon clamoured from inside the tent as the weary men sighed with resignation at another noisy morning.
Su Chen ignored the dark figure who seemed to emanate the aura of Asura as he demonically stared at all his men who were eating at his expense.
The dark figure, with black thunderclouds roaring in the background, stomped huffily with a gentle smile.
Su Chen felt her back tingle as the smiling demon came upon her and backed away to the wall of the tent subconsciously.
A smile playing on his lips but his black eyes gave away the anger he was feeling.
Su Chen gave a start when she realised she had reached the wall of the tent and looked up quickly to see Shen Yi's obsidian eyes staring into her with deep, dark, sadistic humour.
One hand on the wall and the other hand cupping her chin, Shen Yi had cornered her like a black panther upon his prey.
Su Chen glared at him from below, refusing to back down.
