I woke up and it was still dark outside. I looked at my clock and saw that it was 4am. I couldn't sleep so I got up and got dressed. Just then everything came back to me. The fight, the blood, the shattered glass but most of all the note. I couldn't take leaving here later in the morning, actually witnessing my brother giving me away. I made the decision to leave now so I wouldn't cry later. I grabbed my pink duffle bag and filled it with clothes and all of the essentials I would need. I grabbed my wallet and looked inside. I had exactly 15$ that should be enough to get me half way to Tulsa and one phone call from a pay phone. I called for a taxi from the house phone and told them my name and address. Within 25 minutes it was here. I went to my brother's room and kissed him lightly then closed his door. I accidentally slammed the front door so I ran to the taxi before Dakota woke up. I jumped inside and told him to drive me to the gas station that was about 30 minutes away from my house. As the taxi pulled away I seen my brother standing on the road with his head in his hands. My vision started blurring and I rolled down the window.
"I will always love you Dakota. Just don't forget about me!" I shouted out the window, that's when the tears spilled. He was the only real family I had left. Why did everybody have to walk out of my life? Was it my fault, did I drive people away? My thoughts were put on hold when I felt the taxi jerk to a stop.
"We're here kid. Pay up."
I handed the driver 14.50$ and walked over to the pay phone. It was about 5:30am so I figured someone should be up at this hour over at the Curtis house. The phone rang about twice before someone finally answered.
"Hello, Curtis residence. Who is speaking?" The voice on the other end grumbled in a thick New York accent. Dally.
"Dally? It's Hailey! Is Darry there?"
"Oh hey Hailey. Haven't hear from you in a while. Yeah he's here just getting out of the shower. You wanna talk for a bit until he's able to get to the phone?"
"Uh... Sure?" I replied more in more of a question. Why would he wanna talk to me?
"Cool. So how you been baby girl? And why y'all calling so early in the morning?" Seriously what was with all of these questions? But before I could reply Darry came onto the phone.
"Hi Hailey."
"Hey Darry!" I basically screamed I loved my cousins they were like brothers to me and I've always felt like I had a special connection to them.
"What's wrong doll?" Oh yeah. Darry always knew when I was upset.
"Well I'm pretty sure you know I am coming to live with you since Dakota kicked me out but I ran away this morning I just couldn't face him Dar. I'm at a gas station and I just what you to tell me everything will be ok." I started to let tears slowly flow down my cheeks.
"Oh darlin' I'm on my way now your at the gas station close to your house right?"
"Yeah. But I'll start walking so I'll me you somewhere on the road alright?"
"Sure thing. See you soon. It'll be fine."
"I love you Darry!"
"Love you too Kid, now I'll be on my way." With that the line went dead. I still had a quarter left so I went into the gas station to buy a coke. Then I was off on the road to a new life.
