CHAPTER 20

November 26, 2014

"Good evening, I'm Cindi Sims and this is your 6 o'clock news." Cindi smiled brightly at the camera, her white teeth sparkling against her red lipstick. Her blond hair was perfectly curled, not a single hair out of place. She was camera ready. "The small town of Larned, Kansas received a shock today as Dr. Larry Rumsfield was arrested on two counts of murder."

Trevor looked at the TV screen in shock. "WHAT?"

Zacchya and Hollie sat beside him on the couch, slack-jawed, saying nothing.

"After an intensive two day search of Rumsfield's residence in Larned, on suspicion of murder, Officer Zac Reynolds found a body hidden in the basement."

"A body?" Hollie could barely even speak. How could her wonderful brother kill someone? And why on earth would he keep the body? Larry wouldn't do that. There was no way, not Larry!

"Larry's premises were being searched on suspicion of murder. Officer Nick Walker, who had been presumed to die from his injuries after a vicious beating last month, however, after an autopsy, it showed that Nick had in fact, been poisoned." Cindi looked sadly at the paper on her desk, shaking her head.

"This news has shocked an entire community. Larry Rumsfield was a well known and respected doctor. He was also well known outside of Larned for his research with Alzheimer's and trying to find a cure.

"We have an official statement made today from Captain Roark Williams that I will play for you." Cindi nodded to the camera.

Roark Williams' speech began. He was standing in front of the police station in Larned.

"Today we are saddened to announce that Larry Rumsfield has been arrested on two counts of murder. Larry was well known in this town for the good that he achieved. However, evidence has proved otherwise to his darker deeds. It comes as a shock to us all. The whole community will feel the effects of this news, I have no doubts. I hope that you respect the police force to do their jobs without interference. Also, please be respectful to his family members in this hard, trying time. Justice is not always easy, but it is always right. Thank you."

Cindi came back on the screen, her face somber. "There is no known identity of the body found in Rumsfield's basement. Any new information on this case will be heard here first, on KXBN."

"Turn it off, Mom." Zacchya spoke quietly. Hollie clicked off the television without a word.

"I don't believe it! I can't, man!" Trevor paced in front of the blackened screen. "I won't! There has to be some kind of explanation!"

"Trevor..."

"Zacchya! Seriously, there has to be! Larry wouldn't kill.."

"Stop, please," Zacchya begged.

"I just can't keep quiet. You heard her! Nick died and it wasn't my fault! What the hell does that mean? What does it mean?" Trevor's face was red with anger, confusion, happiness, sadness, and every other emotion he could think of.

"None of us know, Trevor. We're all in shock here. But please... he... he is my brother." Hollie said, tears leaking from her eyes.

"I'm sorry, Mom. I just..." Trevor walked over to her, putting his arms around her.

"I know me too." She cried into her son's shoulder.

"We've all had such a hard year. I just don't understand how this could happen. He wouldn't. I know he wouldn't." Trevor hugged his mom tighter.
