Mia's  POV

(Flashback)

"We're going to America,"

My ears tingled with happiness as I heard my dads voice for the first time in years, but also saddened at what the words that came out of his mouth were.

"But papi, I don't want to leave home."

"We have no other choice mi niña (my little girl)" he left the room with a regretful look on his face.

I wondered if it had to do with the 2 relatives that passed away from a strange accident. And one who is currently in the hospital for an unknown illness the doctors still have yet to discover.

I didn't think too much of it, I was only 5.

We packed our bags and headed North to start our new lives.

If I'd known the hell that was awaiting for us, I would have tried any possible way for us to stay.

1 year later...

We were all crammed in one room in a house big enough to fit 5 families.

"Jona, stop her she won't listen!" Cristian whispered yelled as I broke free from his arms.

"Mia don't go, what if they're in the kitchen. You're going to get caught!" I stared into their dark amber eyes, their faces resembled of my own only slightly boyish. They were fighting me physically to stay back, but the look on their faces endured of hunger.

"No I won't Jonny, I'll be right back!"

I got out of our tiny half painted old room and went up the stairs quietly.

We haven't eaten all day, The last meal we had was a piece of potato with a little bit of beans, but that was yesterday.

Papi goes from one job to another so he doesn't get home until late at night, mami sleeps off her depression, so it was the perfect chance to sneak out.

I got to the top of the stairs where the kitchen was in my sight. I saw the loaf of bread on the middle of the counter that papi brought for us so we could make cheese sandwiches. My mouth became watery as my eyes craved the golden brown piece of nutrient.

I crawled towards the back of the counter just to make sure no one saw me. I creeped up the table and I reached for the bread. Just seeing it made me feel a little less hungry.

But just then, a hand grabbed my wrist harshly and pulled me up.

I jumped at the sudden contact.

"Well well well, looks like an animal ran out of its cage. What the hell are you doing here stupid brat?" The eldest daughter of my uncle— Ivonne. Her eyes pierced into my soul, if eyes could eat I would've been long gone by now.

"I-I w-was h-hungry, d-daddy left—"

She yanked the bread off my hand, grabbed a fistful of my hair and smacked me.
