A Twist Of Fate

Chapter 32

Regina and I saw Archie regularly over the last 6 weeks. I'm still nervous about everything but I'm working hard to enjoy these moments with Regina. Today she has an appointment with her OBGYN. The doctor believes Regina to be about 12 to 13 weeks pregnant which is perfect for an ultrasound. I was really happy when Regina wanted me to come along with her. I can't wait to see our baby on the screen. We walk into the exam room and Regina gets up on the table. The nurse takes her temperature and blood pressure and then tells us that the doctor will be right in and she leaves. Now I'm just standing there holding Regina's hand while I look around the room. "Are you ok sweetheart?"  I turn to look at her. "Yes Regina I'm fine. I'm excited to be able to see our baby for the first time". She gives me a big smile and we hear the door open. "Well hello ladies. It's nice to see you again Regina". "Hello Dr. Olsen this is my wife Emma". We shake hands. "Hey". I smile. "Hello Emma it's lovely to meet you.  So how have you been feeling Regina?"   "Everything has been great except for the occasional morning sickness". "Yes that does tend to happen. I'm sorry to hear that".  "I get through it. Emma always helps me. We are all stocked up on ginger ale and saltines". I blush a little. "Those can always come in handy. Good job Emma. So anything other than the morning sickness?"  "No I've been feeling great".  "That's excellent Regina. How about we take a look at how things are progressing?"  Regina nods and I smile. The doctor starts up the machine and Regina pulls up her blouse showing off her cute little baby bump. We hold hands and the doctor begins. We don't see much right away then an image comes onto the screen. "Ok. Here we are. Looks like this little one was hiding on me". She moves the wand around more and the image gets clearer. "Oh my god. That's our baby right there". Regina squeezes my hand tighter. "It sure is my love". The doctor took the measurements and everything that needed to be done. "Holy crap Regina I've never seen anything like this before".  I'm just completely amazed".  "What about Angie's ultrasound, didn't you see hers?"   "Yes of course but it was never this clear. I can see the head and the arm. Look at the legs and those feet". I can't help but chuckle a bit as a few tears fall. "I'll make sure to print out all the pictures so you can look at everything again. I can also send you an email with a video of this ultrasound if you'd like". "Yes Doc please. I'd like that very much". I say quickly. "Dr. Olsen would you be able to tell the sex of the baby this early?"  "Good timing on the question Regina. That's just what I was looking for. I have actually two ways to yell you. If you will look here, I can see what seems to me that. Oh I'm sorry you do want to know right?"  Regina and I both say yes at the same time. "Ok good. Just wanted to make sure. Well like I said it seems that we have a little boy in here". Regina and I look at each other and smile. "We're having a boy Emma".  "Yeah. We are". We both are smiling and holding each other. The ultrasound ends and the doctor hands Regina a few napkins to clean her belly but I do it for her. When I'm done I pull her blouse back down and help her sit up. I rub my hand up and down her back while the doctor writes a few notes in her file. "Excuse me Doc but a few minutes ago you said you had two ways to tell the sex of the baby?"  "Yes I did Emma. So as you both saw one of them was with the ultrasound and the other was by a genetic DNA test. Regina when you were here last we took some blood. We did the normal tests to make sure everything is normal but I also did another test".  "Whoa hold on. You took it upon yourself to run a DNA test on our baby without our permission. What are you trying to prove who the father is? well it's me. I have the proper equipment to make babies doctor. I may look like a girl but below the belt I'm not. I know this is my damn kid. Regina wouldn't cheat on me."   "Emma my love please calm down. Dr. Olsen. Why did you run a DNA test on our baby".  "I apologize for not being clearer with my words. This isn't a paternity DNA test it's only to determine the sex of the baby. The test came out a few years ago and it takes a few weeks for the results so I had the lab run them in case you wanted to know the gender I would have the exact answer for you".  "I'm so sorry I jumped to the wrong conclusion Dr. Olsen. I just got thrown off by the DNA thing. I'm really really sorry. I can can be an asshole at times. I hope I didn't offend you are scare you. I really didn't mean to".  "It's fine Emma and so am I. Your not the first jumpy parent I've had in here. So to continue on, I got the results in yesterday and it confirms what I saw on the ultrasound is that you are without a doubt having a baby boy".  I'm beyond happy right now but obviously still scared. "Oh Emma. I just know he's going to be just like you". She laughs and rubs her belly. "I can already tell because I'm hungry again". I hold her tight and laugh. We separate and the doctor speaks. "So do either of you have any questions?"  We both say no. "Ok then you both can be on your way to enjoy some lunch. Stop by the receptionist on the way out for your  appointment for next month and of course if anything should be off call the office or go the ER right away. It was a pleasure to meet you Emma". I help Regina stand and I shake the doctors hand. "I'm really sorry about earlier Dr. Olsen". She holds her hand up. "Thank you again for the apology but there is no need. You two be on your way now. I'll see you at the next appointment". She says with a genuine smile. I nod and Regina and I go out to the receptionist to make the next appointment. Then we went to Granny's for lunch.
The next few months were much of the same, doctors check ups and delicious greasy food at Granny's. Regina and I still saw Archie but I think I'm in a better place. I'm still totally scared over the delivery but I'm dealing with the pregnancy without an issue.
Another few months later while Regina and I are sleeping I feel a shaking to my arm. "Emma. Emma damn it wake up".  "Huh? What?  Regina are you ok?"   "No Emma I am not ok. I have to pee and I can't get out of bed. Please help me".  I jump up. "Ok babe. Here let me help you". I quickly go to her and help her up. She's due any day now. She stands and hugs my. "Thank you Emma". She puts her head on my shoulder. I think she's crying. "Baby are you ok?"  She lifts her head and clears her throat. "Yes I'm fine. I'm just 9 months pregnant and have so many emotions going on at the same time. Now if you'll excuse me I have to use the bathroom".  "Of course sweetheart. No problem". I walk her over and she walks in then closes the door on me. I go check on Angie and she's sleeping peacefully, as I walk back in the bedroom Regina is standing there glaring at me. "And where where you Emma?"   "Sorry babe. I just went to check on Angie. She's still sleeping". Regina smiles. "Good. Can we go back to bed now my darling?"  I walk over and kiss her. "Of course babe". I help her get back in bed and we snuggle together. A few hours later she sits straight up in bed in what seems to be in pain. "Ahhh. Fuck".  I jump. "Baby what's wrong?"   "I think I'm having contractions. My belly is hard and it hurts".  "Oh god. I'm taking you to the hospital now".  "No Emma it's probably too soon". I jump up and get dressed and prepare everything we need. "I don't care if it's to soon to go to the hospital Regina. I already lost one wife during childbirth I will not lose another one".  "Ok my love. We can go. Just try and stay calm ok, please?"   "I will try. I promise". Regina doesn't think her water broke yet so we do still have time but I'm still taking her to the hospital. I call my dad, who is now living with Kathryn. They both say they will come over to look after Angie, then I help Regina shower. I help her get dressed in comfortable clothing. Her contractions are about 15 minutes apart so we are ok on time. My dad and Kat are sitting on the couch when we walk downstairs. I told him to use his key to let themselves in and that I'd meet them in the living room. Regina has another contraction and they both run over to help. It doesn't last long, but Regina says it hurts like hell. "I'm sorry sweetheart. I'll promise I'll get you the best epidural money can buy". She laughs and kisses me. "Hey dad, Kat. Thanks for coming over so late. I'm gonna get Gina to the hospital now and I'll let you know everything as soon as I can". They both give us hugs and wish us well. Then I help my wife out to the car and we get to the hospital.
