Because of mines in Africa that reach deep into the ground and nuclear wars that decimated Asia, Australia, and Europe, people from all over the world have flocked to North and South America in the year 2449. It has become a safe haven for all people. Just wanting to survive, people from opposing countries learned to live together and share what little resources they have.

You might think that there would be to many people to live on two continents, but only a fifth of humanity survived the wars. It's a tight fit to have decent towns, so that people aren't living on the roads and to keep the economy going, but they manage.

It took the destruction of most of the world to finally achieve world peace, but they got there. The only problem is that the two continents have become too crowded over the generations.

They divided the continents up into a hundred towns of varying size. Twelve are for the elderly and they live more comfortably than most of the towns, but only if their family can afford to sponsor them in retirement. If they can't afford to live there then they continue to live in one of the eighty commoner towns.

Eight towns are for boarding school kids, their families and the leaders, but before you can live there, you or a family member, between the ages of five and sixteen, have to win the trials. These eight towns are the wealthiest.

The leaders are the kids that graduated from the boarding school, and run them. Every single one of them won the trials. Except for the leaders that began the trials in 2094. They have primitive technology compared to the holo technology and teleportation device achieve in the late twenty-first century, but have great advances in genetics and have cured many diseases.
