WARNING!! MENTIONS AND ACTIONS OF SUICIDE!!
The hoard was long gone, though that thought didn't ease any of them one bit. It was out of nowhere, and the same could happen in a few seconds.
Still, they wasted no time in gathering their strength once more, picking up their bags and beginning to walk across the large field.
They would be vulnerable, but at this point, none of them had enough conscious to point it out. Instead the traveler their way across the open field, admiring the view along the way.
It looked a lot better in the countryside, where the population was quite low compared to the city, which had turned into a complete zombie infected chaos.
One of them spotted a tree, and stopped in their tracks. Their eyes looked misty, as if going back to an old memory.
"You ok Linken?" Asked Sarah, who had noticed the boy's gaze. The former jolted at the question, as of unaware of his surroundings before nodding. "I just need a bit. I'll catch up to you guys."
Sarah felt hesitant, not wanting to leave anyone behind, not after that surprise attack, but Linken gave her a reassuring smile, nudging her foreword, and only then did she give in.
She let out a sigh before ruffling the boy's hair. "Don't stay too long." She warned before continuing her walk.
When they were far away enough, Linken let his smile drop, and his eyes turned misty again as he looked at the tree.
A noose.
There was a noose tied to the tree.
Linken was seven years old, his curious eyes starting up at the tree with a girl no older than fifteen dangling from it.
Her eyes were closed, while her mouth stayed open. There was traces of dried spit. Her neck was a blue color. She didn't move, only swinging this way and that by the rope's will. He found it funny.
Linken was seven years old when he found his older sister dead, hanging from a tree.
Linken was ten years old when he began resenting his sister for leaving him alone.
Linken was fifteen years old, as he looked at the rusted noose. A bitter smile split over his lips.
"You could've taken me with you, you know." He lets out easily. "I wonder how long you'd survive in this world. Not long I guess."
He looked at the group far ahead, then back the noose.
"It's fine, I think I'll forgive you after this."
And then the boy took the noose, looking down to see a pile of bones before he began to choke.
