IMPORTANT! I am editing this chapter at the moment so if a sentence randomly stops, or it cuts to a new paragraph or different scene don't worry, it just means I've saved the changes, and left it published so that you are still able to read while I am pulled away.

"What do you think"

I stare at the mirror, a girl with blue eyes and black hair stares back at me, her face long, angular, pale, with black rings under her eyes. Her skin stretches against her high cheek bones as if she hadn't eaten in weeks but really it was only a few hours ago. Her personal stylist had done her best to bring the best out of her by adding dark crimson paint to her lips and silver powder to her eyelids, a dusting of pink covers her cheeks to give her some healthy colour. It works, sort of, but you can still see the undercurrent remains of stress, worry, and fear lingering in her eyes and in the small wrinkles of her forehead.

Turning away from the mirror I look up at Samantha and grin.

"You did an amazing job"

She frowns at me, her eye brows pinch together and her nose scrunches up.

"What? You really did do an amazing job Samantha"

Samantha shakes her head and her beautiful blond locks go flying around but they still manage to stay perfectly curled when they settle back down.

"It's not that, never mind"

I look into her green eyes and realise that she wasn't going to tell me so I back down.

"Okay, but if you ever want to talk, I'm here for you"

She nods her head but then she punches my arm.

"You're a queen Kris, you don't have time to listen to my problems, now go and sit on your throne and do whatever queenly things you need to do, and don't forget to scare someone if they undermine you again"

She jumps up and pushes me towards the door as I throw my hands up in surrender and laugh but as soon as the door closes behind me I fall silent. It's time to get back to business.

...

The moment I leave my suite two guards peel off the wall and follow behind me, the steps loud against the marble floors. I sigh to myself, resigned to my fate of never being alone again. The only other sound to be heard is the swishing of my blue-grey skirts around my legs as I walk. The distance from my suite to the throne room is far for my safety yet many a day I feel inclined to throw my safety out the window just to make my life that little bit easier. After turning into what feels like the hundredth corridor I spy the grand doors of the Throne room, closed for the present moment. The moment the guards and the valet at the doors register my present they straighten and snap to attention. I feel like laughing but catch myself before I do, instead I concede with just a smirk. I walk right up to them and stop, turning to the valet.

"The day has only just begun and yet I find you slumped over while on the job. Bad back perhaps?"

The guards as well as the valet all look down, guilt evident on the faces. The valet mumbles a reply that is undiscernible.

"Seymour, do not mumble, lift your head a speak directly to me."

Seymour, the valet, takes a deep breath before raising his head and standing up straight, looking directly at my chin, avoiding my eyes

...

It's early, like before dawn early, as I make my way through the halls of my palace. I don't like my palace very much, everything is way to expensive, from the paintings to the furniture to the carpeting and wall paint. I am used to the simple life of three bedrooms, two bathrooms and only four people. A simple but happy life. All the prim and proper of this busy palace was starting to grate on my nerves.

This early in the morning the halls were quiet, much to my delight, and only a whisper of the staff could be heard. I made my way through the west wing, stopping only to exchange pleasantries with the guards manning the main doors before opening a small side door and climbing the four hundred stone steps up to my favourite tower of which I had named the power tower. It was the only place that I exercised my magic as no one else was around to watch.

The view from the top always took my breath away. I could see the Blue Mountains to the west, guarding our boarders from two of the neighbouring kingdoms and the great sea to the east, providing an excellent port for trading goods. To the North I could see the fields of crops stretching off into the horizon and to the south, rolling fields a green grass and wild flowers left to their own devices. It was pure, and beautiful, all that was left was an amazing queen and the kingdom would be perfect. Too bad it was me who held the title of queen.

Today when I stepped into my tower, I was not alone. Lady Debra Hale was sitting on a chair facing the eastern window, looking out at the blue sea that was partially covered by fog.

"My mother always said that when the fog rolled in from the sea bad things were coming our way"

Her unnerving purple eyes stayed trained on the fog for a few seconds before turning her head to look at me, she smiled a sad smile.

"The last time the fog came the port was ransacked by pirates, nothing and nobody was left, not a single survivor. They were either dead or missing, my best guess is that they were taken as slaves."

I stare at her, having no idea what to say, after a while I pour both of us a glass of water and sit down. Her eyes never stray from mine.

"Did you loose someone? To the pirates?"

She lowers her head and I feel bad, I should never have asked. I look out the window at the fog then back at Debra, I put my hand on her shoulder and give her an awkward side hug.

"I'm sorry"

She looks up at me, tears glistening in her purple eyes that no longer seem unnerving. She shakes herself and tenses, sitting up straight.

"Don't be sorry, my queen, what's in the past is in the past."

I stare at her before nodding and looking back over the sea where the sun was just starting to rise. It was time, it couldn't wait any longer. The power of the sun flowed through me as the first rays hit my skin, turning my skin a shining golden. The last rays of moonlight hit my skin from the west, flowing through me, mixing with the golden power to make a constantly moving swirling design on my skin. Debra gasped and openly stared, the light captivating her just like everyone else who had seen my mother do it. I gather up the power and project it in waves circling around me and push them out letting them flow free in beautiful circular movements. As the light moves away it changes to different colours, all the colours of the rainbow are represented, flowing out into the open air.

I look at Debra who is smiling admirably.

"What do you think?"

She opens and closes her mouth like a fish out of water, unable to say anything, she shakes her head.

"I felt the exact same way when I first saw the lights to"

Debra nodded before looking out at the fog covered sea. She grabs the small telescope on the table beside her and looks out again to get a better view.

"Lets remove the fog"

I gather up my power preparing to use my weather magic but Debra holds up her hand.

"Wait, there is something hiding in the fog"

She looks again then passes the telescope to me, I take a look and sure enough there is a mast sticking out of the fog. I don't recognise the flag that it flies.

"Debra, what does that flag represent?"

I pass the telescope back to Debra and she looks once more. When I looked at the flag I had seen a blue background in a wavy design and a golden griffin rearing in the centre, holding a small golden ship in its paw.

"It the Kingdom of Palmako's armada flag"

I stare at the map sitting on the wall next to the southern window. The Kingdom of Palmako is an island kingdom, their royal armada was the largest in the realm.

"What are they doing here?"
