CHAPTER SIX: STRINGS

"But it's a trick." Clint claimed as everyone sat on couches after the party, talking about Thor's special hammer. Olive had to say that the hammer did intrigue her. Surely it couldn't be that special, right?

"No, no, it's much more than that." Thor laughed loudly at the statement. Olive sat in between Clint and Maria, watching with interest. Just lift it. She wanted to say, but she didn't want to bring the attention to herself.

"Ah, whosoever be he worthy shall haveth the power." Clint mocked, which caused Olive to laugh. "Whatever, man! It's a trick." He finished twirling his drumsticks around in his hands.

"Please, be my guest." Thor challenged, pointing at Mjölnir. Everyone just looked at Clint as they waited for his response.

"Come on."

"Really?" Clint raised a brow, as if it would be the easiest thing in the world. He stopped twirling the drumsticks as he looked around the room

"Yeah!" Tony nodded, his voice laced with enthusiasm.

"Oh, this is gonna be beautiful." Rhodey said making Olive laugh softly.

"Oh no." She said, accidentally saying it out loud. She slowly turned her head to look over at Clint, who was now looking at the girl with his brow raised.

Clint chuckled softly, "Come on, I thought you were on my side?" He held back a smile.

"It just slipped out." Olive shot back.

"Clint, you've had a tough week. We won't hold it against you if you can't get it up." Tony joked, causing a few chuckles to echo around the room.

"You know I've seen this before, right?" Clint said as he glanced at all of the people around the room. He's about to embarrass himself.

He grabbed the hammer before looking at a smiling Thor as he attempted to lift it. It didn't budge. Olive tilted her head in confusion, as this was the first time she's seen the hammer. "I still don't know how you do it!" Clint laughed, as everyone expected it to stay put, just like it did.

"Smell the silent judgment?" Tony asked with a smirk, his eyes squinted. Olive laughed at the comment.

"Please, Stark, by all means." Clint challenged. Olive was trying her best to hold in a laugh. Tony got up as he straightened his suit.

"Okay." Maria scoffed, a smile on her face.

"Uh oh." Rhodey mumbled. There were a few 'oh no's heard around the room as well. No one expected him to lift the hammer either.

"Never one to shrink from an honest challenge." Tony said proudly. "It's physics." He added.

"Physics." Bruce repeated with a laugh. Olive looked over to see Maria with a huge smile on her face, as she had one just as wide. Upon realizing her shoulders were tensed, she slowly relaxed herself. She wasn't used to laughing, or letting her guard down, or feeling accepted at all. She's been with the Avengers for nearly two weeks, but trust was a difficult thing for her.

"Right, so, if I lift it, I then rule Asguard?" Tony asked, slipping his arm through the little rope looped on the bottom of the hammer.

"Yes, of course." Thor replied with a nod, his smile still wide.

Tony then tried to lift Mjölnir. As expected, it stayed put. Tony sighed before standing up straight, "I'll be right back." He said before walking out of the room.
