"Why the hell would you say that?" Mari shouted as they ran through the rain. Lucas and Mike attempted to use their bikes but it was raining too heavily.
"It just slipped out!"
Mari groaned in frustration as Lucas pointed out Will's house. They ran to the front door and knocked. There was no response and Mari was practically choking on the falling water.
She left the boys at the door and moved around back to see if there was a back for she could go through. But she stopped searching when she heard shouts.
Mari scanned the forest behind her and saw a miniature version of a house and Will was standing in front of it.
He started to tear it down as she ran closer to him.
"Will, stop!"
She tried to pick up the pace but caught her leg on a fallen branch. Her leg got caught and she tripped; falling the rest of the way down.
Once she came to a stop, she groaned and lifted herself up by her arms. Lucas and Mike came up behind her and helped her on her feet.
She cried out in pain but concealed it when she saw Will brokenly staring at the now torn hut. There was a small sign that said 'Castle Byers' in front of the ruins.
Will suddenly reached for the back of his neck and stopped crying.
"What's wrong?" Mike asked.
Will turned to them.
"He's back."
-----
Surprisingly, her aunt had been okay with her spending the night at the Wheeler's house...with three other guys. It really shocked her.
But they had been gentleman and let her take Mike's room. To be honest, Mari didn't think Mrs. Wheeler had even come home last night.
Either way, that next morning, they had gathered in the basement and discussed what to do.
"We have to warn the girls." Mike said.
Lucas nodded and pulled out the radio, "Max, this is a code red. Do you copy?"
Since there was no response, he repeated the same phrase.
"Shut. Up." Max's irritated voice came out from the other side. She shut the radio off and the boys looked baffled.
Mari scoffed and got up, "Radio isn't the only form of communication around her."
She picked up the phone and called Max's number.
"I'm sleeping. Go away."
"It's Mari. Do not hang up."
"Mari? What are you doing over there?"
"Doesn't matter. Something happened. Something bad. Our very lives could be at stake."
"What are you talking about?"
"Just come over to Mike's. We'll explain everything. Hurry."
She hung the phone back up and plopped on the couch next to Will. Mike and Lucas went upstairs to grab some food while the other two waited.
Will looked scared. Mari could practically feel the fear radiating from him. She placed her hand on top of his. He looked up at her with a shaken face.
"It's okay. I'm here and I'm not going anywhere. We'll finish this together." she promised.
He smiled weakly and nodded, "Thanks Mari."
