The Lafayettes were an extremely rich and powerful French family that moved to America due to political issues many generations ago, and now it was Gilbert du Motier de La Fayette turn to live long and rough years in the toxic environment of the family, built up in political lies and schemes all around.
He had never been able to make a real friend as a kid because since very young he realized that either the kids he met at dinners and parties would be just as cocky as their parents or the disagreements between the adults would ruin the friendships he barely had.
There was only one person he could call a friend. A true friend. And that was his cousin Thomas. They were actually pretty similar and would call each other "brother" all the time. Anywhere Gilbert went, Thomas was there too. Any trouble Thomas got himself into, Gilbert was there to help him out of it. They would do everything together and even went to the same boarding school as teens and crushed over the girls when made to go downtown.
The one Gilbert fell deeply in love for was a beautiful light-skinned girl with raven hair and green eyes, but he could barely speak when was near her. Thomas took his brother's side and decided to talk to the girl for him.
"What are you doing?!" Gilbert whisper-yell at Thomas with widened eyes, grabbing his sleeve middle-way towards the girl on the other side of the courtyard.
"Going to talk to her!" Thomas replied in the same tone "Gil, it is pitiful to see you like that! I am doing something!"
"N-No, wait!" Gilbert stammered when Thomas pushed his arm and put his usual confident smirk. Thomas started to talk with the girl and Gilbert's nerves started to burn up, his hand trying to cover his face as he looked around non-stop but where his crush stood.
"Gil?" Thomas' voice snapped him out and Gilbert looked shocked at his cousin and crush right in front of him "This is Anneliese" She kindly smiled and Gilbert raised his hand and waved robotically, his face still burning and Thomas sighs in disbelieve.
"Hi. So, are we going to the cafe or not?" Annelise asked, turning towards Thomas with shiny eyes.
"Yea! Have fun you two!" Thomas said stepping back but the girl grabbed his hand, receiving a confused look from him. Gilbert's heart dropping to his stomach. "What is she doing?! WHAT IS HE DOING?!" He thought as the scene kept going in front of him.
"Hey, wasn't it supposed to be only the two of us?" She asked confused as well "You said we were going to the cafe after saying hi to your cousin"
"No no no, you understood it wrong!" Thomas said quickly waving his hands in front of his chest, trying to avoid an imminent disaster to happen in his cousin's heart "I said you would like to meet my cousin and maybe get a coffee. With him!"
Annelise scoffs and crosses her arms "Like that would happen"
"Hey, are you saying you are way too good for my cousin?!"
"Yea! It's exactly that. I wanted you, not the weirdo"
"Hey!" Both the boys exclaimed.
"Let's move, Gil" Thomas said passing through Annelise and pushing Gilbert away from the school courtyard. They heard her complaining but neither of them gave her the attention and walked until a nearby park, sitting down in the grass. The boys spent a while in awkward silence, Gilbert pulling some grass from the ground as Thomas curled a piece of his puffy hair around his finger just like he used to do when was nervous; which was very uncommon.
"Thanks for that" Gilbert said and Thomas got shocked by the words.
"What?" He asks turning to face his cousin in actual confusion "I literally just ruined your biggest crush since ever and you thank me?"
