Chapter 22: Clarke

I lie in Finn's arms and I can hear his heartbeat through his chest. We're sitting outside by the fire with a few others, Jasper, Monty and Bellamy.

"Congratulations!" Octavia skips towards us. "I heard you're pregnant, Clarke."

"Pregnant?" Monty and Jasper both exclaim. "Who's is it?" Jasper asks.

"Mine," Finn says, bringing me closer to him. He kisses the top of my head and I feel his heart get faster along with mine. Octavia sits down next to me.

"How long have you been pregnant?" Monty asks.

"One or two weeks, not really sure," I say.

"When did you know you were pregnant?"

"Finn scared me and I threw up, and then I threw up some more."

"What are -"

"Okay, enough questions!" I say and ruffle his hair. His questions have attracted a crowd around the fire.

They move in closer and closer so we can't move. All I can hear are their loud voices. Bellamy has walked away, to the edges of the walls. He stands there doing nothing, or so I see at first. In the light of the fire I see the tears rolling down his cheeks, each one glinting just as it falls to the ground.

He takes out his pocket knife and spins it around between his hands and then throws it at the wall. The blade of the knife misses and falls to the ground, much to Bellamy's annoyance. Now he's more angry than sad and he opens the door to outside camp and slams it. Everyone turns round and stares at him.

"What are you looking at?!" he shouts. "Why don't you keep admiring Clarke and Finn and their unborn child? They're the center of attention, aren't they?" He picks up the knife and throws it at the wall again, but this time it gets lodged in there. His anger still doesn't fade away - his cheeks are red and wet with tears and there's a vein pulsing on his forehead quickly. This was it.

Bellamy Blake had broken.

"I feel guilty," I say to Finn.

"It wasn't you're fault, Clarke, I've told you a million times already. I have something special planned for you tonight." He spins me around.

"What is it?" I giggle.

"Maybe a date...? We were gonna have one that night of the party, but we didn't have a chance. This one is gonna be extra special. Get changed into something really nice and meet me back here in an hour."

"Is this not nice?" I gesture to my outfit.

"Everything looks nice on you. I just mean something a bit formal. See you later." He kisses my cheek and runs off into the drop ship before I can say goodbye.

Right. Formal.

"Octavia, I need girl help," I say.

"Ooh, what's happening tonight? A date?"

"Precisely. Finn said I should dress formal, but there aren't a lot of clothes down here." I think for a moment. "I know where to get some! Stay here, I'll be right back with some clothes."

The bunker, that's where I'm headed. I run there quickly and pull the door open. I search through a crate of clothes trying to find something, anything, that looks nice. Picking through items of clothing, I find a few things that I like; a black knee-length dress; a faded blue t-shirt and some black jeans; a white sleeveless shirt that looked good with just leggings. There's also a pair of black slip-on shoes that go well with each outfit, so I take all the clothes I picked to Octavia.

"Where did you get these from?" she asks.

"I found them around camp," I lie. "Which do you think looks the best?" I attempt to hold up all the outfits at once. My left arm holds the dress and shoes and in my right I hold the t-shirt and jeans. The shirt and leggings are hanging from my left leg so I'm standing on one foot.

"Definitely the dress, it looks formal but still pretty. Go and try it on inside and then come out to show me."

I walk inside our house and slip the dress on over my head. It fits nicely and it works well with the shoes. Stepping out of the door, Octavia gasps in awe.

"Clarke, you look amazing. Put those shoes on and rock that date!"

The shoes are quite tight, lucky I'll probably be sitting down for most of the time. Finn isn't there when I arrive, but there's a basic table and two chairs. I braid my hair nervously, anticipating.

A pair of arms snake around my waist and I recognise the scent of Finn. "You look beautiful, Clarke," he whispers in my ear, sending shivers up my spine.

I turn to face him. He's wearing a white shirt with a black jacket and pants. "I'm glad you think so. I like your look as well."

"Is it a bit overdone? I can change if -" I silence him with a kiss.

"It's perfect."

Jasper interrupts us. "Sir, madam," - he puts on a fake French accent - "would you like to take a seat?"

I use all my willpower to not burst out laughing. We sit at the table and both look at Jasper expectantly.

"You shall be served soon." He walks away.

"How did you get Jasper to do this?" I ask Finn.

"When I told him I was planning a date for you, he was so desperate to help I couldn't stop him. I told him he could be the waiter, but I didn't know he would go so over-the-top."

Jasper comes back with a couple of sticks with meat on, kebabs.

"Tonight's special is venison, fresh from a two-headed deer. Enjoy your meal." He hands us the kebabs and I immediately bite into mine.

"This is great,"I say with my mouth full.

"I know, if Jasper hadn't told us, I wouldn't have suspected it was from a weird two-headed deer."

"Thanks for the reminder."

"Am I doing okay for a first date?"

"You're doing just fine."
