A/N: I started writing this chapter like two years ago, so it's weird to come back to it, but here we go I guess...
Everest's POV
When we came back to Merton, Ryder got a phone call from the police department. They said that Chase had been kidnapped! He had somehow taken down his captor, though, who apparently was Merton's most notorious petnapper.
We went to the veterinary clinic in Merton, and the nurses seemed pretty surprised that an army of dogs had entered the building. We were all super worried, of course. Chase had to be fed from a tube, as he was very weak and had passed out on the way to the clinic. Thankfully, he was stable. The veterinarians said that he probably wouldn't wake up until the next day. Rider decided to stay in the clinic and told us to go back to our rented house with Katie.
All the while, Katie had not said a single word. Skye led her into her new room, where she broke down and started crying. Skye calmed her down.
"Marsh, why is she crying? We rescued her," I whispered to Marshall.
"Well..." Marshall started.
"Cali! Cali's gone!" Rubble interrupted.
"How awful! We have to find her!" I said.
"Yeah! Maybe she knows where Cali is. We should speak to her," said Princess.
"I agwee!" said Zuma, looking at Princess in a mysterious way. Interesting...
Just when were about to walk into Katie's room, Skye walked out.
"Hey Skye, what happened in thewe? Was she cwying because of Cali?" asked Zuma.
"Yes," said Skye. "Humdinger took Cali when he was elected. They haven't seen each other in forever. And now, she feels like she abandoned Cali, because she left without her. She is asleep now."
Just as I was about to say something, we got a phone call. I picked up the phone. It was Ryder.
The situation with Chase had gone critical.
Chase's POV
I woke up in an empty hospital room. Light shined through the gap between the door and the floor. I couldn't see any colors, everything was black, white or gray. The plant on the windowsill was black. It must have been dead for a long time. I sat up and got out of the bed, looking back at it only to see my own body laying deathly still. I looked at my paws, which looked gray and tattered.
I walked over to the door passing through an area of the room which was especially chilly. I heard a distant noise.
"Come on Chase, come on!"
It was Ryder's voice.
I wanted to get out of here, now. I quickly walked to the door, opening it, only to find that the light had been replaced by complete darkness. In the far distance I saw two lights, which were coming closer to me. I felt around a bit, finding that the walls damp. I was stepping on some type of gravel, which had two cold metallic beams on top of it. The lights were getting closer, and now there was a thumping noise too. It reminded me of...
Oh no... I thought. Is that... It can't be.
Then I heard a loud honk. The subway driver had seen me. He pulled the emergency brake and the train screeched as it slowed down. But it wasn't fast enough. I closed my eyes, a single tear rolling down my face.
I'm not ready to die.
But just as the train was about to end the bumpy ride that I had been on for over 8 years, everything went silent. A cold breeze went through my fur, and I opened my eyes. I was on a beach, one that I recognized but could not remember from where. A german shepherd was standing about 100 meters away, looking out to the sea. I walked towards it, recognizing that it was the only living object around me.
"Fancy seeing you here, Chase," said the German Shepherd when I neared it.
"Where am I? And who are you?" I asked.
It turned around and revealed itself. It was Sarah.
"Welcome to my world, Chase. It is limited only to my hometown, Guilford, and its surroundings. As you might have been able to notice, this is my favorite spot," said Sarah.
"Yeah, I remember this from the pictures in your apartment," I said.
"I would think so," said Sarah. "Why don't we go for a walk? Just you and me. It's not like you have anything to do, anyway."
"Ok. What do you want to talk about?" I asked.
"Well I figured that you might have some questions for me," said Sarah. "And I have the answers."
We started walking towards the town center. Everything was abandoned and looked like it had been for a long time. There was a question that was eating me up on the inside that I needed to ask.
"Where are we? And aren't you dead?"
Sarah chuckled. "Yeah, I'm pretty dead. Welcome to the afterlife, Chase."
Ryder's POV
After everything that we had gone through, was this it? Chase, my first dog, who I had found abandoned in an alley. All alone. We had been inseparable since that day. I taught him everything I knew, and we came best friends. As we found more dogs, we created the PAW Patrol together. The longest time we were away from each other was when he was in New York. And I was terrified for him. He almost died multiple times there.
And now here he is, in the bed next to me, dying. And there's nothing that I can do to help. God, why am I such an idiot? Why did I leave him here. Just for Katie, who doesn't even like me. Even if she did like me, should would mean nothing if Chase wasn't with me.
Just then, the pups arrived.
"Oh my god, Chase!" said Skye, running over to his bed. The rest of the pups followed her. But there was nothing they could do either. Not even Miracle or Marshall.
Marshall started to freak out. "There has to be something that we can do, right? Please guys! We have to help him!"
The veterinarians who were tending to Chase started to get agitated. "It is okay to be upset, but please don't disrupt our work. We are trying to help him here."
"Pups, let's just go out and take a breather, so that we can calm down," I suggested.
Marshall nodded, and we left the room, taking one last look at Chase.
A/N: Another Cliffhanger? Come on man! What will happen to Chase? Is he dead already? Am I an evil maniac who is very lazy? Find out the answers to some of those questions in the next chapter of Humdinger Strikes Again!
(Also, hopefully it won't take me another two years to publish the next chapter...)
